Coordinator, Research Ethics Board

Burnaby, Canada Simon Fraser University Full time
Union/Affiliation: Administrative and Professional Staff (APSA)
Pay range: $69,102 to $82,420 annually SFU Department Descr: Research Ethics and Security
Position Grade: 7
# of openings: 2
Biweekly Hours: 72

Who We Are

Simon Fraser University is a leading research university, advancing an inclusive and sustainable future. Our purpose – the essence of SFU – is to create and connect knowledge, learning and community for deeper understanding and meaningful impact. We are committed to fostering excellence, innovation, belonging and community in all that we do.

This department is a newly formed unit within the Vice-President Research & Innovation portfolio that manages two key areas: the review of all research at the institution that involves humans, and the new and growing area of Research Security. Most research that takes place at SFU touches on one or both areas. The entire purpose of the Ethics process is to protect the research participants. Research Security is about protecting the researchers and the research results. In doing so, this team works closely with faculty researchers and with the Research Ethics Board (REB) – delving into details of studies and advising and assisting researchers, including post-approval activities, and monitoring.

About the Role

In this role you will provide comprehensive and timely assistance to the research community in navigating the research ethics review and oversight process(es). You are a key part of the function of the REB. The Board’s job is to tease out the ethical issues in a proposed study. You support this by working with researchers to ensure applications are complete, consistent and compliant with REB required standards prior to the study being reviewed by the Board. You will also assist with the study review process – helping the Board to determine if the study meets the requirements of the many different regulations we work under.

This role would be well suited to experienced research project managers, and/or clinical trials/data assistants/coordinator/monitors. The ideal candidate for this role is a person with well-developed relationship building and administrative skills, preferably in clinical or behavioral research ethics. They will be keen to be part of a new team, want to instill a positive culture with a focus on relationships, learning and education, as well as be able to bring efficient, effective, pragmatic, and innovative solutions to support participants, the SFU REB, and the research community.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences, Social Sciences, with three years related experience in a highly regulated administrative environment such as research ethics or clinical/behavioral research in an academic or clinical setting with emphasis on regulations, legislation, and guidelines, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Organize large volumes of complex and diverse information and work and manage priorities. Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. You will be working directly with many of SFU’s top researchers on their most critical projects. Demonstrated conflict management skills, including the ability to resolve conflict from a place of curiosity and learning.  Positive demeanor, solutions oriented, views obstacles as opportunity, demonstrated self-awareness. Reliable, accountable, and collaborative. Team-focused.

What We Offer

At SFU, our goal is to ensure our people are valued and supported by promoting a healthy work-life balance, professional growth and development, as well as a safe and respectful workplace. We offer continuing employees who belong in the Administrative & Professional Staff Association (APSA):

4 weeks’ vacation (prorated for the first year)* Hybrid-work program for eligible positions Employer paid defined benefit pension plan On-campus tuition waiver for employees and their immediate family members* Off-campus tuition reimbursements and professional development funds* And more

*Prorated for part-time employees
