Reporting to the Fire Prevention Officer I, this role is responsible for the application of community fire safety education, fire inspection, and fire investigations through the delivery of programs, enforcement of corporate policies, bylaws, acts and specifically the Alberta Safety Codes Act through the Cochrane Unified Quality Management Plan and the National Fire Code.

Requirements:

Minimum of two (2) years full-time experience as a designated Safety Codes Officer – Fire B1 C1, in a similar fast-paced workplace in a growing and vibrant community NFPA 1031 – Standard for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner Professional Qualifications NFPA 1033 – Standard for Fire Investigator Professional Qualifications  NFPA 1521 – Standard for Fire Department Safety Officer Alberta Safety Codes Council, Safety Codes Officer Fire Inspector Group B Level 1 Fire Investigator Group C Level 1 Fire training and certification are considered an asset.

As a Fire Prevention Officer, you will be accountable for:

Community Fire Safety Education 

Deliver fire and life safety education programs for community citizens and organizations.  Support the development of key messages for Fire Operations related to fire prevention, community emergency preparedness and response programs. Support and delivery of the community fire safety communication strategy which aligns with corporate messages. 

Fire Inspection and Community Safety 

Conduct fire inspections of properties and priorities outlined in the Cochrane Unified Quality Management Plan. Review, interpret and support community development and commercial building plans. Review and approve, where appropriate, permit applications and/or issue permits within the scope of authority and the Fire Services’ mandate. 

Fire Investigation

Investigate post-fire incident events and submit investigation documents. Perform evidence collection and retainment system to ensure the management of evidence and records meets industry best practices and established legal precedence. Develop, update, and maintain all records, files or investigation exhibits collected for the municipality in accordance with the Municipal Records Retention Bylaws and Policies. Responsible for identifying and reporting core fire loss trends for further assignment or community fire education program development.

Core Assignments

Partners with Fire Operations to create opportunities for fire prevention activities to be conducted by members of the fire operations branch. Liaise and collaborate with other departments regarding planning, engineering, and building codes. Ensure operational readiness of Fire Prevention Branch vehicles and equipment to provide an effective, efficient, timely and safe response to incidents and other emergencies on an uninterrupted basis. Respond to public inquiries to address concerns or information requests for community fire safety education, fire inspection and community safety, and fire investigations, make recommendations and participate in resolving concerns. 

Working Conditions:

Working conditions are governed by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Town of Cochrane and the Cochrane Fire Fighters’ Association, Town of Cochrane Policies and Procedures, and relevant legislation.
