Under the direction of the Board of Directors, with supervision by the President, the General Counsel provides legal counsel, opinions, and guidance to senior management, Human Resources, Executive Committee, Board of Directors and other internal and external clients on Institute matters involving legal issues. This position anticipates and is proactive regarding legal issues in the Institute’s operations. The General Counsel oversees the provision of legal advice and interpretation on collective bargaining and labour relations’ matters and the provision of guidance and advice to Employment Relations Officers on legal issues concerning individual representation.

The ideal individual is someone deeply aligned with the institution’s visions, mission, and organizational structure. This individual possesses a robust understanding of the legal framework governing employee/employer relations in Canada’s public service, including federal and provincial jurisdictions. They should have strong leadership qualities, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to navigate complex legal and organizational challenges with diplomacy and insight. They should be highly analytical and detail-oriented, with a proactive approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
