Position Overview

You’re a seasoned expert in the energy industry with a keen understanding of the regulatory and policy environment, and what it takes to deliver comprehensive and compliant strategies that meet customers’ evolving energy needs. You understand the importance of collaboration in developing holistic plans that synergize corporate objectives and resource planning and can leverage your insights and thorough knowledge of the business to engage stakeholders on our vision and direction.

As a Director, Resource Planning and Development, reporting to the Vice President, Energy Supply and Resource Development, you’ll be responsible for FortisBC’s integrated resource planning process, with accountability for the Long-Term Gas and Electric Resource Plans (LTRPs). You’ll also advance early-stage developments of resource options, including commercial contracts and development projects, stemming from the resource plans.

In this role, you will:

Lead a multi-disciplinary team responsible for the development of LTRPs and collaborate with departments to understand our customers’ long-term energy requirements and climate action goals. Drive the development of multi-million-dollar resources to guide early-stage projects from concept and pre-feasibility to regulatory approval. Oversees work plans for strategic projects needed to inform the LTRPs and resource planning engagement activities and participate in regulatory filings by other entities that are related to long-term energy planning activities.  Support the assessment and development of new generation resource options identified in the electric LTRPs and contribute towards related certificates of public convenience and necessity (CPCNs). Represent FortisBC in LTRP regulatory proceedings and champion our views and positions on external energy planning issues, resource planning processes, and related provincial and regional policy development. Manage operations and maintenance (O&M) and capital budgets, as well as selected deferral accounts.

What it takes:

A bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, economics, policy, or environmental studies from a recognized program. A graduate degree in related field considered an asset. A minimum of 15 years of experience in the energy field managing cross-functional teams, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.  Advanced leadership skills to develop a team with diverse backgrounds in a complex and dynamic environment. Exceptional strategic thinking skills and business acumen to identify industry trends, tackle multi-dimensional problems involving many internal and external stakeholders, and craft comprehensive and compliant plans that meet evolving customer needs. Superior communications skills to engage with collaborators, interveners, and stakeholders and foster alignment on complex and technical topics.  Extensive knowledge of the energy industry, regulatory environment, provincial and federal policy, and resource planning.
