As an Articling Student (2025-26) with IO’s Transaction Services and Corporate Legal Enterprise Team , you will work with lawyers and other legal professionals in providing support to all of IO’s business lines. Lawyers within the team specialize in services that support infrastructure and commercial projects, construction, real estate and leasing, lending, technology, privacy protection, government affairs, litigation, and contract management. IO’s goal is to ensure Articling Students receive well-rounded articles, gaining experience in different areas of law. Through IO’s rotation system, students will have the opportunity to rotate through two of the three primary legal groups at IO: • the Transaction Legal and Commercial Resolutions teams, which provide legal support for IO’s major infrastructure projects;• the Real Estate Management and Litigation team, which supports IO’s management of the province’s portfolio of government land and buildings; and • the Corporate Legal team, which provides support for IO’s infrastructure lending program, corporate and IT procurement activity, and technology-focused projects and manages our freedom of information (FOI) office.IO’s rotation system also ensures that students work with a wide variety of lawyers in different areas. Most importantly, working at IO offers you the opportunity to contribute to the well-being of the people of Ontario, develop your career, and learn from some of the most qualified individuals in the industry. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE POSTING/POSITION: •  Articling Term: July 2025 to May 2026 •  Articling Positions Available : Two •  Application Deadline: 5:00pm (Eastern Daylight Savings Time) on Friday, July 12, 2024 (in accordance with the Law Society of Ontario’s 2025-2026 Articling Recruitment Procedures)•  Eligibility Criteria: o Prior to the start of the articling term, candidates must be a graduate of a common law program offered by a university in Canada approved by the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) at convocation (, have received a Bachelor of Laws ( or a Juris Doctor ( degree) or Holder of a Certificate of Qualification issued by the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA). o Candidates must be registered with the LSO’s Lawyer Licensing Process prior to the start of the articling term. o Candidates who are enrolled in or have completed an LSO-designated Integrated Practice Curriculum (IPC) program are not eligible and will not be considered for this role.

WHAT YOU WILL DO AS AN ARTICLING STUDENT:

Conduct legal research and draft opinions on various areas of law, including: real property, leasing, corporate/commercial, secured transactions, municipal lending, construction, contracts, torts, administrative, corporate governance, freedom of information, and privacy. Shadow legal counsel on current project files, attend client meetings, prepare meeting notes, and complete discrete deliverables related to ongoing project files. Assist with the review, consolidation, and update of IO template agreements. Assist with various corporate governance matters, including conflicts of interest determinations, delegations of authority analysis, and corporate policies reviews. Assist in the preparation, review, examination, and interpretation of land title searches and title documents, purchase agreements and closing documents, and leases and other lease-related documents. Attend internal and external meetings and take accurate minutes of discussions and decisions. Review and draft various agreements and ancillary documents associated with infrastructure lending transactions, procurement matters, and commercial projects.  Assist in the review of policies, directives, and trade agreements applicable to procurements conducted by IO.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR IN A CANDIDATE:

Experience or interest in IO’s legal practice areas, including real estate, commercial leasing, construction, litigation, corporate/commercial, public and administrative law Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly and concisely present arguments and ideas. Strong legal research, statutory interpretation, writing and examination/interpretation skills. Exceptional organizational, administrative, and time management skills, including the ability to handle multiple demands and produce high quality work under strict deadlines.  Effective problem-solving abilities with strong attention to detail. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships in a team-based environment. Proficient use of Microsoft Office products and legal research tools.
