What Is CNC Machining?
CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. This technology converts designs produced by Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software into numerical data. These numbers act as coordinates on a graph, guiding the movement of a CNC machine's cutter. Essentially, the computer controls the cutting and shaping of materials into parts, akin to 3D manufacturing.
What Does a CNC Operator Do?
CNC Operators work with machines such as drills, lathes, mills, and presses to shape metals and plastics into finished parts or workpieces. Their responsibilities include:
  • Reading work instructions
  • Loading materials or workpieces into the machine
  • Starting and monitoring machine operations to ensure proper performance
  • Unloading and inspecting finished parts/workpieces to ensure they meet quality standards and technical specifications
  • Deburring and/or polishing completed parts/workpieces
  • Maintaining a clean, well-organized workstation
What Does This Job Offer?
  • Competitive Pay: Starting wages range from $22 to $24 per hour. With two years of experience, CNC Operators can earn between $28 and $32 per hour and may be eligible for bonuses, depending on the employer.
  • Career Growth: This role offers long-term employment and stability. As you gain experience and skills, you can advance to more technical positions such as CNC Machinist, which offers higher pay. Demonstrating non-technical skills can also lead to roles like quality specialist, lead hand, or supervisor.
