Position Summary:

The Counsellor, Health & Wellness Promotion reports to the Associate Director, Counselling Services to provide individual counselling and wellness programming as well as training, education and organization of events to promote awareness of mental health and the impact on the post-secondary student.  The role will involve collaboration with a number of internal and external partners. The Counsellor will assist administration, faculty and staff in working with students with mental health concerns. 

The Counsellor is part of a multi-disciplinary professional team that supports students to function effectively as learners.  The counsellor helps students address personal, social and educational challenges from a prevention and health promotion model, improving their ability to cope with the demands within an educational environment.  Reporting to the Associate Director, Counselling Services, the Counsellor will be responsible for providing short term supportive counseling/therapy when needed  with the majority of focus on extending Counselling Services reach beyond it’s departmental doors into the student community.  The Counsellor must be knowledgeable in health promotion, prevention and one on one single session clinical work.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Provides campus-related awareness activities related to student mental health and wellbeing.
  • Develops activities for students which promotes wellness and wellbeing
  • Develops culturally specific activities which promote health and wellbeing.
  • Leads experiential programming  and training related to mental health awareness 
  • Participates on committees and work groups organized to support the mental health and wellness of students.
  • Provides crisis intervention, safety planning, and assistance with referrals to community and college support.
  • Accurately maintains student files in an online clinical database and record keeping system. 
  • Develops training for students and staff in mental health awareness and wellbeing.
  • Works in collaboration with other campus resources to effectively support the needs of students with mental health needs.
  • Attends staff meetings and supervisory meetings while upholding the standards of confidentiality and respect.
  • Ensure the Associate Director is informed and updated on critical supports or interventions in a responsive and timely manner.
  • Corresponds and consults with students, counsellors and others on various issues related to mental health within a post-secondary context in implementing support or services.
  • Represents Associate Director as a delegate when requested in greater community events.
Qualifications:
  • A Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counselling, or Clinical Psychology from a recognized post-secondary institution.  If in another discipline, state how the field of study is related.
  • Must be a current member, in good standing within a Regulated Health Profession.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience working with people with mental health needs in a prevention or positive psychology model.
  • Minimum of three (3) years supervised clinical experience, working with individuals and groups. 
  • Demonstrated designing or/and co-designing of wellness programs for young people.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver training and workshops to staff and students in the area of mental health prevention and health promotion.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation and human relation skills are essential to interact effectively with the College’s multicultural/racial backgrounds and diverse abilities within the student and staff population. 
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of specialized educational software to support students with unique learning needs. 
  • Familiarity with short term, goal oriented, focused therapeutic interventions.
  • Ability to be innovative within a team environment. 
  • Experience in dealing with crisis situations, developing safety plans, and assessing risk in a variety of contexts
