Job description

Accountabilities:

Performs and provides microscopic interpretation of gram stains, TB stains and other differentiating stains Operation and maintenance of the microbiology analyzers and equipment Identifies, interprets and reports significant findings from infection control surveillance swabs and clinical specimens Knowledge and/or experience of blood cultures, rapid diagnostic kits and PCR Report significant findings and reportable diseases to the appropriate health care providers (e.g. physician, infection control practitioners, public health unit, etc.) Validation of inventory, supplies and new products Recognition, isolation, and identification of significant organisms; performs sensitivity testing Disposes of biohazard waste according to protocols Other related duties as assigned

Job qualifications

Medical laboratory technologist with CSMLS certification Minimum two years recent experience in a hospital microbiology setting Current registration with CMLTO in good standing Ability to recognize microorganisms using colonial and cellular morphology (gram stains) Distinguish colours and recognize smells pertinent to organism identification Familiar with serological and biochemical reactions that aid in identification of microorganisms Working knowledge of specimen set-up protocols and processing in microbiology Must be authorized to practice in the CMLTO specialty microbiology  Strong multi-tasking, critical thinking and problem-solving skills Excellent organizational and communication skills Proven ability to be a team player; strong interpersonal skills Must demonstrate Osler's Values of Respect, Excellence, Service, Compassion, Innovation and Collaboration Excellent attendance, punctuality and work ethic May be required to travel between and work at all Osler sites

Additional information

Hours: Currently Wednesday-Sunday (days/evenings/nights, eight hour shifts) including weekends and statutory holidays (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)
