Job summary

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic qualified radiographer to join the team in Neuroradiology at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. The department is part of the Regional Neurosciences Centre, which is one of the top units in the UK providing a comprehensive range of specialist procedures, tests and treatments for all types of neurological conditions. There are longstanding strong collaborations between Neurosciences within the Trust and Newcastle University enabling research in a variety of areas.

The department is equipped with two Siemens MRI scanners (3T & , a Siemens CT scanner; a Philips bi-plane angiographic unit, a Siemens single plane fluoroscopy unit, Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound and imaging equipment for Neuro Theatre.

In Neuroradiology you will work as part of a small multidisciplinary team, providing high quality patient care, diagnostic imaging and interventional services within the Regional Neurosciences Centre.

Main duties of the job

This is a rotational post and will allow you to work with the diagnostic modalities of MRI and CT but will also give the opportunity to work within the neurosurgical, neurovascular and spinal interventional theatres. You will develop a high level of neuro specific theoretical and practical knowledge. You will develop and enhance your radiographic knowledge and skills to allow you to make informed decisions and work efficiently as an autonomous practitioner. In addition you will work within a multidisciplinary team contributing to the treatment of both complex neurovascular and spinal abnormalities and disease.

You must demonstrate you have the potential for development to be become a confident autonomous practitioner with excellent motivation and communication skills. You will need to have problem solving ability and change management skills and to have the ability to work effectively in a team or independently. You must also have knowledge and commitment to evidence based practice, clinical governance and a clear understanding of radiation protection legislation and MRI safety.

Job responsibilities

Being part of a multidisciplinary team, providing high quality patient care and diagnostic imaging within the Regional Neurosciences Centre, also including provision of on-call system. To be a specialist neuroradiographer in each imaging modality, with a high level of theoretical and practical knowledge as well as skills, allowing informed decisions to be made on imaging techniques.

We are looking for a radiographer who wishes to join our specialised diagnostic and interventional team at the forefront of Neuroradiology in the UK. We offer an induction package, clinical supervision, individualised support around the specialist skills required to meet the needs of our patients and this is provided by all members of the multi-disciplinary team. We offer the opportunity for professional development to undertake post graduate qualifications including MRI, CT, Spinal Intervention and Reporting.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL BE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN A SHIFT PATTERN, WEEKEND WORK AND AN ON-CALL SERVICE.

As part of your role as a Senior Radiographer in Neuroradiology, you will have the opportunity to work in all imaging modalities within the department and then to specialise in areas of interest.

In MRI we undertake standard, complex and advanced neuro imaging.

In CT we perform all neuro imaging, but in addition we perform and imaging that is required on patients from ICU/HDU as these units are also located on level 5.

In neurovascular imaging we treat a range of neurovascular pathologies in including cerebral aneurysm, tumours and arterio-vascular malformations. We also deliver a region wide mechanical thrombectomy service to treat large vessel occlusions seen in stroke.

We have a spinal interventional service and are involved with imaging in neuro theatres.

We also provide a TCD service to patients following SAH and provide clinics for patient with sickle cell disease both here at the RVI and at JCUH

Person Specification

Knowledge

Essential

Working knowledge of relevant professional and NHS policies. Knowledge of practical implications of IRMER (2000) regulations.

Desirable

Knowledge of Neuroradiology specific techniques.

Skills

Essential

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Good organisational skills. Ability to manage own workload. To be a self-motivated individual and have the ability to use initiative

Experience

Essential

Post qualification experience. Previous experience in IV cannulation. IT Basic experience

Desirable

Previous experience in CT, MRI and/or Angiography Relevant post graduate qualification.

Qualifications

Essential

BSc (Hons) in Radiography or equivalent Current HCPC Registration. Current up to date CPD portfolio IV cannulation certificate

Desirable

Relevant post graduate qualifications.
