Job Description

The City of Merritt has a full-time opportunity for a Clerk Typist with the Planning and Development Services team. This team is dedicated to helping our customers - the public, developers, contractors, and building professionals – with applications for business permits, building and safety inspections, demolition permits, plumbing permits, sign permits, rezoning, strata conversions, and subdivision applications.

In this role, you are a key point of contact for the department, and therefore, you have an immediate, distinct effect on relationships with internal and external customers. With your keen attention to detail and motivated approach, you provide helpful and friendly customer service to assist customers, answer questions, investigate and resolve or escalate inquiries and complaints.

As a Clerk Typist, you contribute to a positive team environment and coordinate with the team to assist with operational initiatives, prepare land title documentation and registration, conduct data entry, document management, filing, and other related duties, to support the department’s success.


Qualifications

  • 1-3 years experience in similar roles supporting a busy office department, creating land title documentation and registration, and providing professional customer service. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum typing speed of 50 wpm.
  • Proficient computer skills, including the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Ability to think critically, facilitate solutions, find alternatives, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to listen, influence, motivate, provide feedback, and resolve complaints.
  • Strong prioritization and time management skills with a high degree of flexibility.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
  • Superior interpersonal communication skills.
  • Resilience and the ability to react to situations in the moment and stay aware of changing priorities as they arise.
  • Ability to contribute effectively to a culture of safety.
  • Ability to work in a busy, dynamic environment.
  • A valid Driver's License and satisfactory, safe driving history.

Employment is conditional on a satisfactory police information check for new hires and those working in designated positions of trust, including those working directly with vulnerable persons.



Additional Information

This position is within the union bargaining unit with a pay rate of $29.93 per hour (2024 CUPE rate).  This position will be posted until filled.
