Salary: Acadia offers a comprehensive benefit package in addition to a starting salary of $37,851 per annum (SEIU Technician 2). Salary increases to $43,242 following successful completion of 6-month probation period. (Annual salary rates based on a 35 hour per week schedule and will be prorated for the 9-month sessional term.).

What you'll do

Responsibilities

Acadia seeks a Garden Technician in the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre and Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens for a full-time 9-month reoccurring sessional role which typically runs from April to December each year. The Garden Technician assists with the maintenance and sustainability of the living plant collections and grounds of the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens and Acadia Woodland Trails.
Specific responsibilities will include:

horticultural tasks and landscaping, watering, and fertilizing, pest management, and planting. perform weekly trail walks to look for hazards and assess trails, resurface trails as needed, brush-cut invasive species, work with arborist to remove overhead hazards, use chainsaw to remove fallen trees as needed. become knowledgeable about native flora and invasive species present in the Gardens, habitats, and ecology. use botanical keys and texts to identify species. organize, advise, and coach garden volunteers and seasonal staff. maintain and repair all equipment and infrastructure used and located in the Gardens and Trails. maintain inventory and order supplies related to Gardens, Trails, and Greenhouses. provide tours and interpretation to faculty, staff, students, and the public. assists with other duties associated with the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre, Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens, and Acadia Woodland Trails as needed.

What you'll need

Qualifications

Must have a diploma in Horticulture with sufficient related work experience in garden, nursery, landscaping, or other professional horticultural industry positions.

Must hold and maintain a current, valid Nova Scotia Driver's License.

Proficiency with landscaping tools and equipment.

Nova Scotia Pesticide Applicators Certificate, Chain Saw Safety Course, and Brush Cutting Safety Course will be considered assets.

Applicants must have strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and prioritize workload effectively.

Applicants must have a demonstrated proficiency in the use of MS Office applications and in the use of databases and maintaining records.
