Interested?
Operate a refinery testing lab including the operation, maintenance and quality control of the lab instruments, data management and reporting using appropriate industry specific technology. Ensures that all tests be performed according to applicable procedures on a safe and timely basis.
What You'll Be Doing
- Performs laboratory testing on samples inclusive of Flashpoint, Distillation, Viscosity, Asphalt quality, pH, Conductivity, Chloride, Oil & Grease, Penetration, Softening point, Salt content, Vapor Pressure, Hydrogen Sulfide, Sediment & Water, and other tests as assigned.
- Prepares lab solutions and standards used in analysis and quality control.
- Prepares samples for analysis according to applicable procedures.
- Ensures lab chemicals are properly labeled, following WHMIS approach, and stored safely.
- Performs instrument maintenance and quality control as per procedures and recommended best practice.
- Utilizes and maintains technology related to lab operations, including but not limited to instrument control & system interfaces, LIMS and data reporting.
- Collects samples as required in various sample container sizes from trucks, pipelines, tanks, process and QC buildings.
- Use of company vehicle to transport samples around the refinery. Fuel up the lab assigned company vehicle when required.
- Administrative work including data review and entry into LIMS and applicable data reporting tools.
- Maintains safe work procedures and a healthy lab environment in compliance with Gibson Safety, environmental policies and applicable procedures.
- Assists in training less experienced lab staff.
- Assist in the collection, labelling, boxing and shipping of samples to third party labs for analysis.
- Keeps up to date with changes to industry accepted testing standards.
- Recommends appropriate replacement and advises on options for new equipment when necessary.
- Performs basic house keeping duties.
- Maintains clean sample point locations within the facility.
- Communicate lab results and any actions taken to immediate supervisor / manager.
- Communicates and follows Company Policies, Procedures and Guidelines.
- Reports all spills, emergencies and incidents & near misses to Lab Supervisor.
- Informs Lab Supervisor of any lab issues affecting operations or stakeholders.
- Demonstrates a personal commitment and proactive approach to Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) through participation in all applicable EH&S programs and ensures safe operation of the branch, team or unit and compliance with all Company EH&S policies and procedures.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
What You'll Be Doing
- Chemical Technology Diploma – or equivalent Education.
- A degree or diploma from a technical institution in a related field would be an asset.
- Knowledgeable in using Microsoft office applications. Advanced competency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word.
- Knowledge of ASTM testing standards for both asphalt and petroleum product would be an asset.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Knowledge in applicable lab operation technology including data management and reporting (using LIMS), instrument operation and system interfaces.
- Advanced understanding of hydrocarbon chemistry and test standards.
- Ability to perform all duties and responsibilities in an efficient and timely manner.
- Familiarity with applicable testing standards (API, ASTM, etc.) and manufacturers recommended procedures regarding operation, calibration and maintenance of instruments.
- Competent with the functional knowledge requirements outlined in the job profile assigned via the Competency Management and Development System (CMDS).
- Ability to work and contribute in a team environment while independently managing multiple and competing priorities.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- The majority of the work is performed in a lab environment.
- This position requires physical mobility and able to perform duties in a confined space and/or in the vicinity of dangerous goods.
- This position requires employees to wear appropriate PPE as required by the company’s safety policies and as required for weather conditions.
- Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces as well as climb ladders and stairs.
- Standing and/or sitting for long periods.
- Occasional bending and twisting is required as is prolonged neck positioning.
- Some crouching, squatting, kneeling.
- Frequent to constant upper extremity movements (elbows, forearm, wrist, handgrip).
- Lifting up to 40lbs.
- Pushing up to 30lbs and carrying up to 40lbs.
