a) A part-time hourly appointment / one semester is for less than 9 hours in any one semester.

This is the first in a series of production courses designed to overview the fundamental elements of visual media, especially as it relates to photo-based media. The course explores photographic meaning and form using the book as the primary focus, with students completing a book project over the course of the semester. The emphasis is on creating a relationship between formal and compositional elements of images and their content. Theoretical ideas are placed against practical context of production methods and techniques. Antirequisite: DM8105. The successful candidate should have experience with and a deep understanding of the photo book, including concepts such as sequence, repetition, conceptual book structure, and practical methods engaging design, layout, and book production. The ideal candidate will be familiar with a wide range of photo books (historical and contemporary) and a knowledge of artist’s books. The candidate should be able to teach at a graduate program level. An MFA in photography or equivalent academic and creative experience is a minimum qualification. Scheduled on Tuesday, 10am - 1pm.

PLEASE NOTE:  Pursuant to the University's  and as a condition of employment, all successful candidates will be required to either submit valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or receive a Course delivery in Winter 2023 will be online, in-person or hybrid at the sole discretion of the hiring unit. Candidates hired for in-person courses will be required to carry out their teaching on campus. Candidates teaching remotely are required to have access to the appropriate technology, i.e. computer with camera and microphone and high-speed internet. 

Qualifications

Applicant Responsibilities and Application Requirements:

2. The courses or number of sections of the same course and/or package they would like to teach

3. Attach an updated resume and any other relevant information concerning their candidacy. 

4. Which courses of all those posted by the Department the candidates consider themselves qualified to teach. (If possible, include the number of times the course content of each of the applied -for courses has been taught). 

5. The email address to which the letter of appointment should be sent, and any periods when the candidates cannot be contacted. 

6. Include a brief report of activities undertaken to maintained currency in the field. Please note that the currency reports required from returning contract lecturers by the Collective Agreement are not required as part of the application process; however, you may elect to submit your report along with your application as evidence of the maintenance of currency.

Selection Criteria - Weighting%: 

Candidates will be evaluated using the following rating criteria and weightings. Specific qualifications that are required or considered desirable are included with course information in individual postings.

a. Education: The level of relevant academic degrees including credentials and professional designations, as applicable; and/or degrees typically held by a teacher in that discipline/profession in the university sector; 

b. Experience: In addition to demonstrating the extent and variety of relevant work and/or community experience in the professional field or discipline, an applicant must also demonstrate the extent of university teaching experience and previous experience teaching the same or an equivalent course at Toronto Metropolitan University, or an equivalent course at another University; 

c. Currency: Candidates must demonstrate evidence of having maintained up-to-date knowledge (including practice skills, where appropriate) in a specific field/discipline, and/or demonstrate evidence of having maintained academic currency in the specific field/discipline relevant to the course(s) for which the candidate has applied which may include exhibitions, grants, publication in a peer-reviewed journal,

presentation or attendance at relevant academic conferences, and/or attendance/participation in teaching-related conferences (e.g. Toronto Metropolitan University Faculty Conference), workshops, seminars, etc.; 

d. Teaching Skills: Teaching skills may be evaluated using tools such as Instructor Assessment forms and Faculty Course Survey results or equivalent documentation; 

e. Interactive Skills: Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with colleagues and students; ability to work effectively in groups; ability to resolve conflicts constructively; ability to carry out the duties and obligations of a Contract Lecturer in a respectful manner; ability to empathize with others and consider varied perspectives; commitment to on-going self-assessment.
