The English Language Institute offers high quality ESL/EAP (English as a Second Language/English for Academic Purpose) programming for Toronto Metropolitan University, using an innovative theme-based curriculum, developed in-house by the English Language Institute teaching team. Our teaching methods promote student engagement, motivation, and encourage students to take responsibility for their own language learning.

It is crucial for the English Language Institute’s Continuing Education Contract Lecturers (CECLs) to maintain close oversight of the students to ensure the successful development of their linguistic and academic skills. Qualifications - CE

Experience:

The successful candidate needs to demonstrate expertise in teaching English for General and Academic Purposes for CLB 7/8 (IELTS 6.0) or equivalent.

This expertise includes teaching in a blended learning environment: online, in-person, synchronously and asynchronously. The candidate must demonstrate familiarity with innovative, learner-centered approaches and experience in customizing and modifying these approaches and teaching strategies according to the needs of the program and specific groups or individuals. 

Education:

Applicants are expected to have the following:

1- A recognized certification in teaching English to speakers of other languages. 

2- A Master degree in Linguistics/ in English as a Second or Other language/ in Education is also preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

They must also be committed to working collaboratively with their fellow CECLs, administrators and management to deliver a seamless theme-based, proficiency-oriented curriculum. Applicants should demonstrate experience working with diverse groups in a multicultural and multilingual environment. A high level of emotional and cultural intelligence is essential. The successful candidate will be committed to using innovative teaching approaches suitable for diverse learners, as well as the integration of new technologies in their teaching. 

English Language Institute CECLs play an essential role in supporting programs’ objectives, including a strong emphasis on holistic student support, the creation of a positive, safe and inclusive teaching environment, and a strong commitment to the well-being and success of all students.

Applications are invited for the Continuing Education Contract Lecturer (CECL) positions for the Fall term. In addition, applications for substitute teaching will be accepted. 


Information About English Boost program Summer 2024: 

Dates: Fall term (Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024, to Friday, August 23rd, 2024) 

Delivery Format: Blended (in-person and online synchronous and asynchronous)

Orientation date: Wednesday June 26th, 2024

LSA: Monday-Wednesday: 1:15 PM - 3:15 PM - In-person

Thursday: 1:15 PM - 3:15 PM - Online Synchronous

Friday: 1:15 PM - 3:15 PM - Online Asynchronous

Appointments are for 10 hrs/week for LSA, of blended teaching plus administrative hours as needed, for a single section. Applicants may indicate in their application whether they are interested in teaching one section or two. In addition, CECLs hired for the English Boost are required to participate in 2 hours of orientation, 2 hrs of a midterm meeting in week 3/4, 2 hrs. wrap up meeting in week 7.

The position involves daily lesson planning, modifications, development of assignments, and activities. In addition, CECLs are responsible for the coordination and delivery of the program curriculum in collaboration with the rest of the teaching staff and administrative team. To support student development, CECLs will meet regularly and individually with students to identify and work on areas for improvement using the asynchronous hours assigned to both teachers and students per week. CECLs will also provide specific and timely feedback. Additionally, CECLs must complete administrative tasks to support program objectives and attend staff meetings with the administrative team.

NOTE: On offer of a teaching contract, successful applicants for whom the Chang School has no transcripts on file will be required to furnish The Chang School with official, original academic transcripts issued by their advanced degree granting institutions.
While applicants may submit Faculty/Course Survey results from the Winter 2020, Spring/Summer 2020, Fall 2020, Winter 2021, and Spring 2021, these results will not be used as evidence of teaching effectiveness by the selection committee due to the impact of COVID-19 on these semesters. A negative inference will not be drawn if FCS results are not submitted for these semesters. Alternate evidence of teaching effectiveness may be provided by the candidate for consideration by the selection committee.
