We are one team, with one goal and we all work together to continue making our community great. The Opportunity The Water Operations Branch is a branch within the Infrastructure Department. The branch’s key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s environmental infrastructure and systems including water supply, treatment, and distribution systems. This includes the repair and maintenance of drinking water treatment systems, water mains, valves, hydrants, residential main shut off valves, repair and replacement and water meters for service billing; the inspection of water mains and services; the installation of Industrial / Commercial / Institutional water services and meters, new home meters and hydrant metered gate valves; the Backflow Prevention Program; the resolution of water quality or water pressure issues/complaints; the maintenance of City standard drawing details for water specifications; and the prevention of infrastructure damage through the locating services for all of the City of Barrie's buried infrastructure in accordance with "One Call" legislation. The Laboratory Technician (Water) position performs a variety of analytical tasks including regulatory and non-regulatory sample collection, preparation, extraction and analysis according to a Quality Management System, Standard Operating Procedures and Permit requirements. Together with coordinating and administering all necessary external lab services and chain of custody procedures, the Laboratory Technician (Water) evaluates results and provides recommendations assisting in the efficient operation of the drinking water system and with maintaining compliance and conformance. Position Equivalency Code: C Experience  Two (2) years of laboratory experience performing chemical and bacteriological analyses, including six (6) months of experience in a water/wastewater treatment laboratory Experience with Quality Assurance/Quality Control Programs (QA/QC) Knowledge/Skill/Ability  Knowledge of the principles of chemistry, biology and related sciences; principles and methods of chemical, biochemical and bacteriological testing and analysis; chemicals and materials used in the laboratory; laboratory safety and equipment care Knowledge in Quality Assurance and Quality Control Thorough working knowledge of appropriate related legislation, practices and procedures Excellent organizing, record-keeping, written and oral communication skills Ability to judge color end-point changes Hand and finger dexterity to perform sensitive titrations and volumetric measurements and to operate a computer key board Conditions of Employment Satisfactory Criminal Record Check* *Please note that this is a requirement of the position for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the  Police Record Check Procedure .
