DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



Under the direction of the Supervisor, the Laboratory Assistant is responsible for performing duties within their scope of practice including as described in the job description: ordering, accessioning, receiving and preparing specimens for histological and cytological analysis; simple grossing of histology biopsy materials, data entry; quality control, operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment; filing of blocks and slides; discarding of wet tissue; temperature monitoring; preparing of reagents; preparing specimens for send-out to reference laboratories; ensuring the cleanliness of equipment in the immediate work area; participating in a student training program, as required; maintaining a professional appearance and representing the laboratory in a professional manner; immediately reporting any unusual incidents which occur in the performance of duties; follows established safety and infection control procedures; and, performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Medical Laboratory Assistant certificate from a recognized training facility (in good standing); OSMT (MLPAO) or CSMLS Certification required;
* proven previous Laboratory Assistant experience in a Histology/Cytology medical laboratory preferred;
*Previous or current working experience performing grossing of surgical pathology biopsy specimens preferred;
*Completion of continuing education in the area of gross examination of biopsy specimens preferred;
* proven good organizational, prioritization and time-management skills;
* effective communication and interpersonal skills with the promotion of good public relations;
* able to work effectively in a busy environment with frequent interruptions and maintain effective work relationships in a team-based environment;
*strong computer keyboarding skills;
* knowledge of infection control principles and practices;
* knowledge of WHMIS;
* Physically capable of performing lifting, bending, turning frequently throughout the shift to accomplish the tasks, sitting walking and prolonged standing;

* proven good attendance record with capability of maintaining this same standard.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

The terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Hospital and OPSEU Local 348.

Successful External applicants must provide a satisfactory Criminal Investigation Reference for the vulnerable sector, dated within the past six (6) months.
