The Opportunity:

To provide patient focused assessment, intervention,and education to those affected by serious mental illness and or acuteinstability in a population of adolescent, adult and geriatric presentations. This position is responsible for responding tocrisis/emergency situations of patients presenting in the Emergency Departmentand patients referred for internal psychiatric consultation within CGMH. To provide timely triage, assessment and casemanagement of treatable illness with a view to short term intervention and useof consultation. The position requires familiarity with fundamentalpsychiatric presentations, medical co-morbidity and psychotherapy.

Qualifications:

Registration with the College of RegisteredPsychotherapists of Ontario. Experience with Substance Abuse/Concurrent Disordersan asset Minimum 4 years clinical experience in a mental healthsetting, including case management, and/or individual and group counselling. Current CPR certification Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act, HealthCare Consent Act and Substitute Decision Maker Act Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificationrequired Knowledge of the DSM IV Sound assessment skills with regards to physicalassessment, mental assessment and risk assessment. Experience in the application of Mental HealthAssessment Tools Knowledgein Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Strengths Based Therapy and CognitiveBehavioural Therapy considered an asset. Exceptional written and verbal communication,interpersonal and organizational skills. Knowledge of family Dynamics Knowledge of pharmacology treatment of psychiatricdisorders. Knowledge of Regional Resources Must strive to continuously provide a safe andsupportive environment for patients, staff, physicians, and volunteers Must adhere to the duties of workers, as stipulated inthe Occupational Health and Safety Act Must have an ability to effectively communicate(written and verbal) in the English language in order to provide excellentcommunication with team members, patients and families. Ability to communicate in additionallanguage(s) is considered an asset. Must have basic computer skills Must be dedicated to professional growth& development Must be able to perform all bona fideand essential duties of the position, which may include physical demands suchas moving/transferring patients, pushing, pulling, bending, etc. Must have demonstrated excellentattendance/performance record Excellent organization andprioritization skills Ability to work independently andeffectively communicate with other members of the health care team Preferred Masters level of education andregistered with one of the following colleges; Social Work, OccupationalTherapy and Nursing or a related field and registered as a Psychotherapist.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Conduct assessment based on acceptedcurrent mental health standards Initiate appropriate intervention, whichmay involve short- or long-term therapy and treatment, case consultation,engagement and production of Shared Care with family medicine, facilitation ofpsychiatric, addiction or forensic referral and involvement with primary careand social service supports. Work comfortably with pharmacologicalintervention as warranted. Maintain the clinical record inaccordance with clinic policy and regulatory college requirements. Consult with family physicians andcircle of care as appropriate regarding psychiatric care and systemcoordination Liaise with long term care, retirementhomes and hospital, medical and social service agencies. Assume an active role as member of amultidisciplinary team. Active participation in training,education and clinical supervision. Participate in quality improvementexercises Perform duties as may be assigned byLeadership.
