The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has openings for Jr. Recreation Staff Students for the summer of 2024. These positions will work up to 24 hours per week. These positions will start approximately July 2, 2024 for a period up to August 30, 2024. To be considered for the first round of interview, please submit your application by March 8th.

Job description

The Jr. Recreation Student will be responsible for assisting in various areas within Recreation Services such as camps, aquatics or Play Pod park programs. Delivery of positive customer service will be an asset to this position. This position will be provided exposure to our programs and experience working on recreation sites, receiving leadership and mentoring.

Essential responsibilities

All Areas

Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies Responsible for assisting staff in their daily operations Assist with special event preparation and delivery tasks Implement the philosophies of HIGH FIVE Attend all staff training sessions/meetings Maintain program participation statistics Enforce rules consistently, tactfully and promptly Follow the policies and procedures in the CK REC Summer Manuals Maintain qualifications Maintain a positive image with the public Provide customers with program information Seek additional training opportunities Assist with handling concerns Other duties as assigned

Aquatic

Assist lifeguards in emergency situations Maintenance and upkeep of the pool facility (wearing proper footwear and personal protective equipment) Collect swim fees and prepare the bank deposit Answer the phones and provide customers with program information or redirect their call when required Assist in maintaining accurate daily pool log

Camp

Assist with the set-up and take down of summer camp activities as required Assist with program participant supervision on weekly field trips as required Assist with lunch coverage for day camp staff Assist in the planning and implementation of camp activities suitable for the age, abilities and interests of campers

Play Pods

Have a fun-filled summer being active, playing games, and working outside in our community parks Demonstrate energy and enthusiasm while delivering all Play Pod activities Be a positive role model for all program participants and your team Assist with set-up and clean-up of all program equipment Follow our policies and procedures Effectively communicate with participants, parents, and your team Provide recreation programming outdoors Be able to work at multiple park sites throughout Chatham-Kent

Essential qualifications

To qualify for this summer student position, students must currently be enrolled in school full-time for the 2023/2024 winter term (normally ending April, May, or June) and/or returning to school full-time in the 2024 fall term (normally starting in August or September) Because of the responsibilities of this position, students must be 14 years of age or older. Because of the responsibilities of this position at some camp locations, students must be 16 years of age or older Students are required to have transportation to and from various locations

Certifications/memberships/licenses

Current Certification in Standard First Aid/CPR (WSIB approved) prior to camps or pools opening Certified with the High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development prior to camps or pools opening

Work environment/hours of work

This position works both indoors and outdoors This position works weekday hours, with afternoon, evening and weekend hours

COVID-19 Vaccination

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.

Driver’s licence/vehicle requirements

Because this position would be required to travel, a valid Province of Ontario driver's licence with a reliable motor vehicle is preferred.

Background check requirements

Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original vulnerable sector Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment (dated in 2024 and no earlier than six months prior to the date of employment); please note that it may take several weeks to obtain a Police Information Search.

Essential physical and/or safety requirements

Maintenance (wearing proper footwear and PPE) Completion of Health & Safety course Protecting self from the sun (sunscreen, hat and hydrating with water) Non - slip footwear (no crocs, spongy flip flops etc.) Easy to slip off or swim with(pool) Closed toed shoes (no crocs, flip flops etc)(camp) Bending: frequent crouching (up to 13.64 kgs or 30 lbs cleaning and setting up equipment/toys) (cleaning up equipment, getting in and out of the pool, bending, squatting, or kneeling to speak to patrons /kids in the camp or pool) Walking: frequent balancing; constant walking on level surface (working in the parks with many different surfaces) Throwing (up to 22.73 kgs or 50 lbs) (equipment clean up and maintenance; camp games, crafts implementation and set up) Standing: frequent standing inside, outside (more than 30 minutes at a time) (greeting patrons, working with the camp kids)
