Support Staff Full-time New Position

(First consideration for Support Staff and Academic positions will be given to internal applicants in accordance with the respective Collective Agreements)

The Technologist provides technical support to faculty and students in the School of Engineering & Technology programs. The key responsibilities of this position include managing the use of facilities, supporting established learning objectives, demonstrating skills to students, and completing remedial instructions for students requiring further assistance in mastering practical skills. The incumbent provides technical support in matters of a complex nature which requires a high degree of independent judgment, technical specialization, and experience.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department working fully on-site five days per week.

Responsibilities:

Demonstrates the practical skills and safe use of equipment to Conestoga students and staff Sets up equipment in shops and some lab spaces Provides guidance to students and researchers towards the successful completion of their shop or lab projects Supports planning, manufacturing, assembly, and commissioning of ENG/IT and Applied Research projects Provides instruction to students requiring further assistance in mastering practical skills in the shops or labs Participates in the evaluation of student performance in the shop in conjunction with faculty assignment/project requirements; Monitors student project progress Advises new faculty on lab structure and procedures Maintains shop facilities and equipment, including repairs and preventative maintenance to equipment or sub-contracting the repairs of equipment Evaluates and maintains inventory of equipment and consumables Prepares purchase requisitions for student and shop supplies and machine components Maintains students’ tool kits for various machining projects Establishes and prepares Gift in Kind documentation and works with industry to secure donations for shops, assists in the negotiation of consumables with suppliers Collaborates with the Health & Safety department by providing documentation and reports, updating shop binders, documenting inventory of supplies and equipment, maintaining repairs, and shipping and assessing hazardous goods Works closely with the Purchasing department to ensure supplies and equipment are ordered according to College policies; Provides monthly credit card documentation Collaborates closely with other Technologists to ensure consistency within shops and labs Provides orientation of shop procedures and protocols to new Part-time and Full-time Technologists, faculty, and student helpers Works closely with Facilities Management around shipping and receiving and facilities management Monitors program supplies expenses versus budget Approves the repairs of lab equipment under the program budget Provides direction in the selection and procurement of capital equipment Develops workshop activities and projects, and set-ups and delivers workshop activities for visiting non-college students

Qualifications:

Certificate of Qualification as a General Machinist (429A) is required Certificate of Qualification as a CNC Programmer (607C) is considered an asset Certificate in Master Cam for 2D Mill, 4/5 Axis Mill, Lathe, 2D and 3D CAD Operator is preferred Five years of practical experience as a certified Journeyperson Must be flexible and organized Must possess excellent human relations, communication, and interpersonal skills Leadership and problem solving skills Ability to work independently or as part of a team Ability to explain ideas and concepts thoroughly to students Good computer skills
