QUALIFICATIONS:

Library technicians will have a two-year College Secretarial Diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with and ability to utilize PC computer software for word processing, spread sheets and databases, keyboarding skills and possess the necessary organizational and clerical skills to support teachers and students in the library. Library technicians should have a knowledge of and ability to use an automated library system where applicable. French language (verbal and reading) is preferred.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work in close cooperation with staff and at the direction of the principal to select books and other resource materials which meet the needs of the school and enhance programs. Create and maintain vertical files. Be familiar with and be able to utilize the Dewey Decimal System and electronic categorizing system. Keep the filing system for learning resources up to date as the collection changes. Support and assist students, teachers and parents in the Library with research methods including the use of computer programs, CD ROM’s, the Internet and library searches. Process materials that have been catalogued and classified. (This may entail placing a preprinted label and pocket on the book and shelving the book.) Sort and file cards into Shelf List Drawers. Maintain the collection ( repair books, shelf read, replace borrower’s cards and pockets, spine labels, plastic jackets, reinforce paperback books with clear plastic (mactac), etc. Coordinate and provide advice to parents and/or students performing volunteer work ( shelving, circulation, etc.) Assist with circulation duties ( carding, overdue books check-in and check-out), and maintain a list of overdue books. Assist with the annual inventory of all library resources and equipment and the weeding of collections. Assist in maintaining library attractiveness with book displays, bulletin boards, etc. Assist teachers with book fairs. Maintain files of publishers catalogues. Request office supplies as required and assist in the annual preparation of the bulk order list of library supplies. Use the automated library systems, where applicable, for information retrieval and the circulation of resources. Provide advice to library users pertaining to rules and procedures of library use. Accept donated materials and forward them to the office for approval. Assist with the weeding of inappropriate or outdated resources from the library collection. Perform other clerical duties from time to time as assigned by the principal.


HOURS OF WORK:

31 hours per week – between the hours of 7:30 to 5:00
