MWF 113 - Life Sciences for Midwifery - Winter 2025 - 1 Position

Classes and Lab are held on separate days (TBD) and alternate weekly on campus or online

This course is divided into two sections: the Nature of Matter, and the Nature of Life. This course provides an overview of basic concepts relating to chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology. Content areas will include practical applications of clinical chemistry, specimen collection, related disease entities and pathologies, and laboratory values. A variety of evaluation methods will be used.

Type, Duration and Form of Appointment:

This is a part-time appointment. MWF 113 is a one semester course that meets for three hours weekly. The course uses a problem-based learning approach. Enrollment is approximately 45 students. The student will meet for 2 hour labs, lab exams and assignments weekly. These are normally facilitated by a lab Chemistry Dept. TA who will be available for extra lab quizzes grading. Even if the labs are conducted virtually, the Lab TA is expected to assist with lab facilitation. (PLEASE NOTE: The delivery of these courses may be online, in-person or hybrid, and successful applicants will be required to have access to the appropriate technology, i.e. computer with camera and microphone and internet).

* Teaching Assistant(TA)/Graduate Assistant(GA) support hours listed here are academically required to deliver this course/section. The successful applicant will be provided appropriate TA/GA support. Additionally, if eligible, they will receive 20% of the total extra student payment as outlined in Article 17 of the CUPE 3904 Unit 1 Collective Agreement.

Duties to Include:

Preparation for course, teach course assigned according to prescribed curriculum and methods, evaluate the work of students, counsel students, prepare and invigilate examinations, and participate in departmental course review and planning activities. Delegation of lab quizzes and assignments to the Lab TA. Perform other functions as customarily performed by academic personnel including participation in orientation, faculty development sessions, departmental meetings and committees, in addition to other duties as stated in Article 17 of the Collective Agreement.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

-Must have a graduate degree (MSc or PhD) in a related discipline (Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology) 

-Must be familiar with the Ontario Midwifery Program and Scope of Practice for Registered Midwives in Ontario 

-Understanding of the Midwifery Education Program 

-Knowledge of/previous experience with problem based learning is an asset

-A combination of education and experience will be considered
