Main Purpose and Function

The Green Infrastructure Engineering Assistant provides research, design and technical support to an inter-disciplinary team responsible for managing the City’s green infrastructure assets throughout their lifecycle, to support key service outcomes including drainage, water quality and climate resilience. The role is responsible for asset data management and analysis, operations and maintenance planning and execution, and other tasks related to effective management of green infrastructure assets over their lifecycle.

Key Contacts and Reporting Relationships

The position reports to the Senior Green Infrastructure Engineer responsible for management and integration of green infrastructure assets in the public realm.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

Identifies and responds to data needs, and performs moderately complex data analysis related to green infrastructure asset management, lifecycle costs and asset performance to support decision making. Data may relate to green infrastructure design, construction and maintenance, public realm features, landscape features, curb and drainage assets, rainfall patterns, water quality or other related records. Manages, analyzes and presents geospatial data using GIS software such as ArcGIS. Creates maps, graphics, and presentations for public consultation, website content, and internal communication with graphic programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and PowerPoint. Supports procurement and contract management tasks for operations and maintenance of green infrastructure assets. Supports and occassionally leads field work for operation, maintenance and monitoring, including site visits, equipment installation, CCTV camera operation and overseeing contractors Manages the asset registryand integrates record drawings for green infrastructure assets based on transportation and public realm geometric designs of moderate or higher complexity using AutoCAD, GIS and Hansen, applying civil engineering principles. Communicates with stakeholders, engineers and senior staff to support management of green infrastructure assets according to best management practices and engineering principles. Prepares research, technical studies, reports and presentations on topics of moderate complexity, including undertaking relevant field observations and notes and verifying accuracy of the content. May act as a technical liaison to internal and external partner groups, such as Street Operations, Sanitation, Sewer Operations, Planning and Development Services, BIAs and transit agencies. Supports the development and enhancement of City processes to incorporate Green Infrastructure asset management principles, design elements, drafting standards and overall design consistency; may take on specific assignments related to the research and development of asset management guidelines and/or standards. Participates in project-specific public consultation processes, including as a branch representative at public events, answering questions specific to green infrastructure policy and practice. Responds to public enquiries about green infrastructure policies and projects. Organizes and sometimes leads meetings with internal and external stakeholders. Performs general administrative duties including data entry, taking meeting minutes, taking and organizing photos. Other duties/responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by technical courses related to the work such as planning, urban studies, sustainability, engineering technology, environmental studies, or related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Working knowledge of integrated rainwater management and green infrastructure policy, planning, design, maintenance and/or operations, with specific understanding of the components and function of green rainwater infrastructure assets including bioretention, rainwater tree trenches, permeable pavements and subsurface infiltration systems. Working knowledge of green infrastructure, public realm and/or transportation design principles and methods Knowledge of asset management principles and standards along with quality management frameworks such as EGBC’s Quality Management guidelines and Permit to Practice. Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills Strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at the same time, set and meet deadlines, and adapt to emerging or changing priorities Abilities with green infrastructure, transportation and/or public realm mapping and/or design, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), mapping and graphic design software such as ArcGIS, MapInfo, Adobe and AutoCAD along with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Ability to read and interpret complex engineering plans and specifications, and solve complex street geometric problems. Ability to work with relevant design guidelines Ability to conduct research, collect and analyze data, performing field studies and providing technical, communications and/or logistical support for design, planning , research and/or policy development projects Ability to work collaboratively and effectively on inter-disciplinary teams, with staff across City departments, with contractors, consultants, outside agencies, industry stakeholders and the public Ability to develop communication materials for workshops, meetings or presentations and supporting stakeholder engagement strategies Ability to work independently and to provide support and advice while functioning effectively in a team environment Ability to meet transportation requirements
