Job Summary:

The incumbent directs the operation of the Platoon in the provision of fire protection and emergency services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Coordinates the response to fires and other emergency alarms. Assumes overall command of the fire or emergency scene unless relieved by a senior officer. Directs, trains, appraises all shift employees including volunteer fire fighters, and participates in recruitment. Is authorized to issue verbal reprimands and contributes to higher levels of discipline in accordance with the progressive discipline directive. Follows, and ensures, so far as is reasonably practicable, the Platoon follows, established safety procedures and standards. Maintains and performs minor repairs on all firefighting equipment and supervises custodial and light maintenance services at the fire stations and surrounding grounds, including ice and snow control. Prepares fire and incident reports and maintains station log books and other records. Coordinates and monitors assigned programs and monitors the annual operating and capital budgets for those programs. Conducts preliminary fire investigations and ensures the preservation of the fire scene and integrity of evidence, pending investigation. Collects evidence, ensures the chain of custody and, recommends further investigation to the Fire Chief, RCMP, Fire Marshals Office or other agencies as required. Coordinates and performs fire safety inspections and pre emergency planning and completes appropriate forms and records, including drawings. Conducts tours of Fire Halls and delivers public fire prevention and safety workshops including babysitters’ fire safety program and Fire Safety House Program. Monitors all City building alarms and answers all problem calls after hours, and notifies the appropriate personnel accordingly. Monitors and ensures the correct response to alarms at selected City, YTG and federal facilities.

Number of Hires Needed 1 Position Requirements

Working Conditions:

Position works 7 shifts every 14 days; day shifts are 10 hours and night shifts are 14 hours. Exposed to health hazards, smoke/fumes, temperature extremes and noise in firefighting and emergency situations.

Knowledge and Skills:

Completion of Grade 12 or G.E.D. All certificates and courses required for Captain and 1st Class Firefighter = 1226 hours Officer Level II Certificate - 9 credits = 405 hours Confined Space Rescue Operations Certificate One week = 40 hrs Emergency Operations Centre Certificate One week = 40 hrs High Angle Rope Rescue Technician One week = 40 hrs Total Hours 1751 hours Previous Experience - 5 years full-time municipal fire fighting plus 2 years fire fighting supervisory experience Leadership, Incident Command, Firefighting Strategy and Tactics, Supervisory experience, Emergency Operations experience, Human Resource Activity experience, Administrative experience On-the-Job Experience – 90 worked shifts (6 months)

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
