Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Transit Supervisor the incumbent performs leadership over an AM or PM shift crew of approximately 10 bus drivers, to deliver safe, reliable, citizen-focused, transit services throughout the City of Whitehorse. The position supports the effective, efficient maintenance of Transit services and provides training to Transit Operators on service delivery standards, policies and procedures. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Coordinates, arranges/adjusts driver assignments/coverage, monitor, maintain schedules and coverage plans, to ensure the safe delivery of reliable, effective Transit bus services on all City of Whitehorse routes for the AM or PM shift. Directs, assigns, monitors and maintains the flow of work of assigned crews. Also trains assigned staff and contributes to their recruitment, performance appraisals and disciplinary action. Reviews and resolves work issues/challenges and recommends measures for improvement. Contributes and supports the development and adoption of recommendations to ensure service delivery improvements are implemented efficiently.  Responds to public inquiries. Contributes to the preparation of responses to complaints and concerns. Conducts initial reviews and fact-finding of incidents to facilitate problem-solving efforts, address driver concerns and safety needs, and facilitate the implementation of satisfactory solutions. Reviews, develops and relays reports on maintenance and repair needs of City transit bus equipment, liaising with Transit maintenance services resources and others to arrange for maintenance and repair actions. Conducts a variety of general administrative and reporting functions. Performs back-up/contingency coverage of Transit bus operation on assigned shift and/or on an emergency basis, to ensure continuity of service in the event of sudden, unanticipated incidents (e.g. driver suddenly incapacitated, etc.). Follows, and ensures that reporting staff follow, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures, practices and standards. Oversees and provides leadership in safety management, including: preparation, and implementation of safe work procedures.  Act as Supervisor, Transit Services. Performs related duties as needed.

Working Conditions:

This position may be required to work between hours of 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. from Sunday through Saturday based on a 40 hour work week. Work is performed under a mixture of outdoor, on-site, and office conditions. 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

Completion of Grade 12 Class 2 Drivers' License with Air Endorsement and a clean Driver's Abstract A minimum of three years' safe driving record including a minimum of two years of customer service experience is required with some supervisory experience. RCMP Vulnerable Sector Check Completion of a three-month on-the-job orientation to become thoroughly oriented to City and Transit Department bus service requirements, policies and procedures. Strong client service orientation. Excellent interpersonal skills, and effectiveness in de-escalating conflict situations. Personal suitability for working with the special needs of a vulnerable clientele. Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations. Proven ability to maintain concentrated effort, demonstrate attention to detail, effectively work to advance and achieve goals, organize the work of others, set priorities, and demonstrate effectiveness as a collaborative team player. Excellent oral and written communication skills

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
