Duties:

This position will be working in community in Halalt First Nation. Working in collaboration with employers and community, deliver instruction of all aspects of theory and practical skills required in the Carpentry Foundation and Apprenticeship Programs to students in Halalt First Nation.

Ensuring program standards are maintained, preparing and developing course materials as appropriate, and submitting student evaluations and grading are key responsibilities. Operating on a team approach to deliver both classroom and practical objectives in shop operations while prioritizing safety standards is essential. Additionally, sensitivity to the needs of Indigenous students and communities is required, integrating Indigenous perspectives, knowledge, and practices into the curriculum, fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment that respects Indigenous cultures, traditions, and languages.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success. Successful candidates will participate in activities outside the classroom including student support and department committees.

Required Qualifications:

Carpentry Interprovincial Trade Qualification plus five years recent relevant experience working in the trade with an emphasis on residential construction. Provincial Instructor Diploma or equivalent (if in progress, to be completed within 2 years).

Familiarity with and demonstrated skills in teaching adults. Proven ability in classroom management. Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and excellent interpersonal skills. A high level of energy and enthusiasm is essential. Proven positive interpersonal skills in dealing with students. Ability to work effectively as part of a team comprised of administrators, instructors and support staff. Demonstrated knowledge of computer applications appropriate to the teaching environment. Successful candidates will be responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds and learning styles. Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record. Valid OFA Level 2 Certificate required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with Vancouver Island University programs, policies and procedures. Some supervisory experience. Experience working in community with Indigenous students.
