Job Summary

 

Do you have a passion for history? Are you interested in building a career in the museum sector? Consider joining the Museums of Mississauga’s education team for a rewarding role as an Interpreter. Under the supervision of the Coordinator, Education and Engagement and Supervisor, Museum and Education, Interpreters are responsible for leading educational programs, providing engaging tours of the historic houses at Bradley Museum and Benares Historic House, and supporting special events. Whether leading a memorable experience on-site or facilitating a meaningful outreach program off-site, Interpreters are expected to provide excellent customer service to all our visitors. Evenings and weekends are required.

Duties and Responsibilities

 

•    Lead education programs for children and adults.
•    Develop content and provide tours of historic houses to a diverse public during public hours, events and private bookings.
•    Provide excellent customer service at all times to the public, including school groups, visiting artists, community groups and other stakeholders.
•    Assist with execution of special events including event set up and tear down, leading on-site activities, providing parking support and traffic direction, assisting event organizers.
•    Operate point of sale terminal and follow cash handling procedures for admissions and donations.
•    Follow schedule of cleaning and upkeep of historic house interiors. 
•    Research and information gathering.
•    Assigned tasks during public hours shifts.
•    Other duties and projects as assigned.

 

Skills and Qualifications

 

•    Experience leading educational programming for children and adults.
•    Experience supporting the development and delivery of special events. 
•    Must have completed or be enrolled in a post-secondary education program in History, Archaeology, Anthropology, Museum Studies, Cultural Studies, Fine Arts, Education or related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered.
•    Knowledge of historical information related to Mississauga.
•    Cash handling experience.
•    Emergency or Standard First Aid with CPR B or C certification.
•    High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development certification.
•    Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
•    Available to work weekdays, evenings, weekends and holidays required
•    Valid G class driver’s license and access to a vehicle is an asset.
•    Employment offer is conditional upon receipt of a Level III - Vulnerable Sector Check from a Police unit that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga.

 

Hourly Rate/Salary: 19.22 - 22.84 
Hours of Work: Up to 15 hours 
Work Location: Bradley Museum
