Job Purpose

The Manager, Engineering is responsible for the day-to-day management of the engineering department ensuring timely engineering design to produce Fabrication shop and erection drawings. This role ensures development of engineering standards and design tools, while developing strategies for improving the efficiency of delivering engineering design to drafting. The Manager, Engineering provides engineering support to the estimation and project manager teams, various internal departments, and external support to clients.

Responsibilities

Display a commitment to Waiward’s incident-free vision, values, and culture. Establish a performance driven culture and maintain employee morale and motivation. Prepare and implement an annual engineering operations plan. Direct the engineering team to design most/all the connections on typical projects and ensure this information is provided to drafting to incorporate in the drawings they produce. Develop and execute an overall plan for the maintenance and future development of engineering standards and design tools. Develop and implement methods to improve the efficiency of the connection design, and work with key drafting leadership to develop methods to streamline design communication between the departments:Lead “Pre-Fabrication” efficiency for both operational and development.Develop ongoing training tools, organize webinars, and assign mentors to engineers to effectively coach employees. Provide the engineering for fabrication procedures and methods, assist fabrication with engineering and safety of heavy lifts, temporary lifting lugs and temporary braces, and assist in the design of miscellaneous fabrication devices, such as lifting beams, etc. Provide ongoing engineering for construction in the field relating to ensuring safety during field and construction operations: lift studies, temporary bracing, erection procedures, fall protection, site visits to determine conditions on job sites, etc. Deliver engineering support to other Waiward departments, as required: quality (technical requirements), purchasing (material grades, alternate grades, bolting issues, etc), drafting (standards development for Waiward, etc), shipping, etc. Attend meetings and ensure engineering is represented at kick-off meetings, regular project meetings, updates, etc.

Qualifications

B.Sc. or M.Sc. Degree in Civil Engineering. Registered as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng) with APEGA. CWA approved Welding Engineer certification is an asset. A minimum of 8 years of experience in structural design, with 1-2 years in a supervisory role. Experience with connection design and familiarity with AutoCAD and Tekla Structures. Exceptional organizational and multi-tasking skills that are complimented by effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication. Highly motivated with the ability to work within a fast-paced environment and maintain a high-volume workload. A team player with strong work ethic who can work independently and is passionate with regards to creating and maintaining a positive employee experience at Waiward. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).

Working Conditions

The incumbent is required to work in an office environment with moderate noise. The job may require the incumbent to walk stairs; be outside in inclement weather (slippery surfaces and cold); carrying objects, driving, and being exposed to normal office routines. The incumbent is also required to provide regular Fabrication shop and Construction field inspections that occur on a bi-monthly basis.

Physical Requirements

The incumbent is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: viewing a computer terminal for extended periods of time; and extensive reading. The incumbent is also required to stand and sit for extended periods of time and must be able to climb ladders and approximately 3-4 flights of stairs.
