Detailed Job Description

The Parks and Trails Maintenance department of the Climate Action, Planning and Development Services division has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the position of Labourer II – Parks & Trails Maintenance. Reporting to the Parks and Trails Supervisor, this position offers 76.5 hours bi-weekly starting on May 6, 2024, through to October 1, 2024.

The Parks Maintenance Labourer II's role is to keep municipal parks and trails clean, safe, and well maintained and will ensure the elimination and control of hazards to ensure public safety in the parks and trails. This includes maintenance of playgrounds, docks, hard courts, SK8 park, waterpark, picnic tables, fencing, signs, drinking fountains and many other park fixtures and furnishings.

Qualified candidates hold a grade 12 diploma supplemented by 2-3 years of experience in a similar role with experience using a variety of small to medium hand and power tools including but not limited to: brush-cutters, pressure washers, floor mounted carpentry tools, chainsaws and working around equipment such as forklifts and loaders. Qualified candidate possess previous experience installing, repairing and maintaining play areas, park furniture and other fixtures and structures and possesses experience brush cutting, raking, weeding, and pressure washing. Candidates must have knowledge of safe work practices and must be physically able to perform medium to heavy manual duties in all weather conditions. A valid level 1 first aid certificate is considered an asset.

The successful candidate is customer service focused with excellent active listening and verbal communication skills and demonstrates commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace within their team and will create and maintain effective working relationships with others while contributing to a positive teamwork environment. The starting wage for this position is $33.49 an hour.

As a requirement of the position, the successful applicant must hold a valid class 5 BC driver’s license and must provide a satisfactory driver’s abstract prior to beginning employment.
