About the City of Welland
Reporting to the Supervisor of Parks and Forestry, the Landscape Technician is responsible for the landscape design of horticulture displays, as well as coordinating and participating in the installation of seasonal plantings for city parks, cemeteries, and open spaces. This position also coordinates the day to day operation of the horticulture crew and provides operational support for the municipal cemeteries as required.
About the Position
The duties listed are not meant to provide a description of each and every job performed but only those which represent the core functions of the job.Responsible for landscape design and coordinating all installation procedures for beautification of the city parks, cemeteries, and open spaces, for both short and long-term projects.
Design specialized seasonal floral displays for the city’s floral commemorative beds using a variety of annual and perennial plants.
Prepare designs and working drawings for staff to follow during seasonal planting changeovers of the city’s floral areas.
Coordinate the daily operations of the horticulture crew when performing landscaping and maintenance activities to ensure productivity, efficiency, and quality control. Also, ensuring that work performed by staff is compliant with Health & Safety Regulations and Procedures.
Assist the Supervisor of Parks and Forestry in preparing budgets for the purchase of materials and supplies in accordance with the City's purchasing by-law.
Assist with coordinating the daily cemetery operations including burial layout, marker and foundation installations, updating cemetery plans and records, and responding to inquiries from the public.
Represent the Parks Division and work with various organizations and community groups for the selection of design components to be placed in the City's specialized floral display beds.
Assists with presentations to garden clubs, schools, and special ceremonies as required.
All other duties as assigned.
Duties & Responsibilities
A degree or diploma in Horticulture, Landscape Design, or Landscape Technology from a recognized post-secondary institution.Three (3) years’ practical experience in landscape design.
A valid Class “D” Ontario Driver’s License with “Z” endorsement.
A valid Landscape Exterminators License issued under the Ontario Pesticides Act is considered an asset.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Accreditation and working knowledge of IPM is considered an asset.
Book 7 Traffic Control Certification, with the ability to set up traffic control in work zones during roadway maintenance operations.
Current First Aid and CPR Certification
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Access, and Paint. As well as Dynascape Landscape software, and any other relevant computer applications.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Excellent customer service skills with a strong sense of public service and cooperation, and well-developed abilities to deal with the public and community groups.
