The Role

Student Affairs and Services invites applications for a regular probationary Counsellor position (full-time) to start August 6, 2024.

Applicants will also be considered for addition to our contract faculty list.

Douglas College Counsellors provide culturally sensitive individual counselling, group support, psycho-educational programming, assessment, and crisis intervention services to enrolled students presenting with personal, emotional and mental health concerns.

The Counselling team’s work culture embraces consensus-based decision making, supporting each other’s wellness and personal/professional development, open and respectful dialogue, and a commitment to lifelong learning. As a team we have identified the following areas of importance: equity and inclusion including IBPOC and LGBTQ2S+ issues and supports, and
mental health and wellness literacy. We welcome candidates who can support and join us in more skillfully supporting our diverse students and community at Douglas College.

The Counselling team supports the Douglas College’s strategic plan goals outlined under the themes of successful students, social and environmental responsibility, responsive learning, and healthy and effective work and learning environments.

This role is a faculty position, that reports to the Director of Student Affairs and Services. Responsibilities Provide personal and career counselling to students on an individual and group basis Provide services in-person and via remote means (e.g., zoom) Design, plan and deliver workshops and/or group sessions on wellness and personal management topics Assess and appropriately respond to emergent situations Liaise and refer students to other resources within the college and community as needed Support students on academic probation in moving towards their academic goals Assist students in understanding and navigating Douglas College educational policies Teach college courses which focus on mental health and lifespan development Participate in departmental, divisional and college committees representing Student Affairs and Services Consult and support College faculty/staff who are working with students on counselling and mental health issues Maintain confidential counselling records and manage information in accordance with college policies and ethical standards Option to supervise masters-level practicum students To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Counselling, Social Work, or equivalent from an appropriately accredited institution Up-to-date knowledge and experience in the following areas:Common mental health concerns, including depression and anxietyIssues related to academic success, including procrastination and time managementSuicide assessment and threat assessmentCounselling people in transition across the lifespanCareer counselling approaches, including administering and interpreting career assessmentsEthical issues as they relate to counselling in a college setting Experience using technology to provide virtual counselling, and a commitment to ongoing development of competency in appropriate and ethical uses of technology within a counselling setting Competency counselling across cultures, including IBPOC and international students Ability to identify and support students dealing with isolation factors Experience supporting survivors of sexualized violence and abuse An understanding and appreciation for Indigenous ways of being and knowing Ability to support clients who experience racism, violence in relationships, and lateral violence Understanding and experience supporting clients with career development and career counselling Demonstrated ability in crisis management, intervention and problem-solving skills Experience communicating with diverse populations Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing Understanding and ability to support students with issues related to academic success Interest and/or experience in public speaking, group presentations and group facilitation Commitment to ongoing professional development Experience in counselling at a post-secondary educational institution is an asset Eligibility for certification with a Professional Association (RCC, CCC, RCSW, RSW, or equivalent)
