Our client is an established and dynamic privately-held organization in the Hamilton area. Due to strong growth, they are adding a Controller to the Finance team. This role is 100% onsite.
The Controller reports to the CEO and plays a critical role in the financial management and control of manufacturing operations within a company. This position involves overseeing financial planning, reporting, analysis, and cost management for the company's engineering and manufacturing processes. The Controller collaborates closely with various departments, including production, supply chain, and finance, to ensure accurate and timely financial information, as well as to support strategic decision-making.
To be considered for this position, you must be a CPA with 5+ years of accounting experience in a project based (construction, engineering) or manufacturing industry. You must have an entrepreneurial mindset and "can do attitude" and willing to jump in to get the job done. You must be willing to work in a fluid and dynamic environment where you have the exciting opportunity to build processes. You embrace change and enjoy the satisfaction of "building things". You are a true Controller who will take ownership of the Finance function. You are passionate about understanding and knowing all aspects of the company's finances and financial process.
Financial Planning and Analysis:
- Develop, implement, and monitor financial budgets, forecasts, and operating plans for the manufacturing department.
- Conduct variance analysis to identify deviations between actual performance and budgeted/forecasted figures.
- Provide insightful financial analysis to support strategic initiatives, cost reduction efforts, and process improvements.
Cost Control and Management:
- Monitor manufacturing costs, including direct labor, materials, overhead, and other operational expenses.
- Review jobs on an ongoing basis with Project Managers to ensure projects are on track and on budget.
- Collaborate with the procurement and supply chain teams to optimize inventory management and procurement processes.
- Identify areas for cost reduction and operational efficiency improvements while maintaining product quality and safety.
Financial Reporting:
- Prepare and present accurate and timely financial reports related to manufacturing performance, cost analysis, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Ensure compliance with accounting principles, regulatory requirements, and company policies.
Inventory Management:
- Monitor inventory levels, turnover rates, and inventory valuation to ensure accurate representation of manufacturing assets.
- Coordinate with production and supply chain teams to minimize excess and obsolete inventory.
Process Improvement:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for process optimization, automation, and standardization.
- Implement best practices to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in manufacturing operations.
Internal Controls and Compliance:
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls over financial processes within the manufacturing department.
- Ensure compliance with financial and operational policies, procedures, and regulations.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with production managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to provide financial insights and support decision-making.
- Communicate financial performance, trends, and recommendations to senior management in a clear and concise manner.
Required Qualifications:
- CPA designation
- 5+ years of accounting experience
- 5+ years of construction/engineering/manufacturing industry experience
- Strong ERP and Excel skills
- Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret complex financial data
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with diverse teams
- Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and a proactive attitude
- Knowledge of job costing, percentage completion, revenue recognition, cost accounting principles, and supply chain dynamics
