Job Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) role models clinical excellence and the core competencies of the practice standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), as well as the policies and procedures of Southlake Regional Health Centre (Southlake). The RN works collaboratively as a member of the health care team.
The successful candidate will be motivated, self-directed and a key member of a dynamic interdisciplinary team with defined roles focused on quality patient care and patient flow. The successful candidate will be responsible to provide excellent care to a diverse acute medical patient population in a fast-paced setting.
The Registered Nurse, Outpatient Cancer Clinics and Systemic Therapy Suite practices at a high level of autonomy and accountability in collaboration with oncologists and the inter-professional health care team to provide a continuum of patient care from prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, palliation, bereavement and survivorship. The Registered Nurse, Outpatient Cancer Clinics & Systemic Therapy Suite will plan, coordinate and assess all aspects of care of the cancer client and family, following the standards set out by the: Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO) Standards of Care, Roles of Oncology
Primary Responsibilities
•Provides patient and family focused care within the RN scope of practice, based on the three factor framework of the College of Nurses of Ontario
•Functions in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures, including emergency codes.
•Ensures that practice is consistent with entry to practice competencies, standards of practice, guidelines and legislation.
•Communicates effectively with patients, families and all members of the healthcare team.
•Practices collaboratively with members of the healthcare team to provide elements of care for patients/clients with complex health issues.
•Practices collaboratively with other members of the interprofessional health care team.
•Provides consultation and/or clinical support to peers as needed.
•Contributes to the assessment and documentation of each patient's health status on an ongoing basis.
•Assists in the development and implementation of the Plan of Care and evaluates its ongoing effectiveness.
•Assists in the orientation/preceptorship of new staff members and students to the clinical units.
•Acts as a role model and champion to identify and integrate safe, best practices into daily activities to foster the delivery of safe and exemplary care.
•Takes a leadership role in the coordination of patient care in assigned area
•Assumes charge nurse role when assigned
•Assists in the orientation/preceptorship of new staff members and students
•Effectively utilizes human and material resources
•Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of clinical pathways
•Provides consultation and/or clinical support to peers as needed
•Other duties as assigned by Manager/delegate
•Demonstrates the ability to perform initial and ongoing health assessments, either in person or virtual assessments, that identify factors that will impact the patient’s cancer experience,
•Demonstrates the ability to formulate a plan of care with the patient, family and inter-professional care team to address issues identified during assessments, implement and evaluate the outcomes of best evidence based care,
•Demonstrates the application of evidence informed knowledge, skill and judgement in the management of cancer treatment modalities including: administration, symptom management, safe handling, adverse events as a consequence of disease and or treatment
•Demonstrates understanding of and utilizes principles of monitoring of patient during blood and blood product transfusion and other supportive care treatments,
•Demonstrates ability to recognize and critically analyses situations for potential ethical and legal issues and apply ethical frameworks to support patients and families’ decision making.
Skills & Abilities
•Minimum of 1 year recent (within the last five years) and relevant oncology/palliative nursing experience in an acute care setting preferred
•Knowledge of the philosophy and concepts of Oncology and Palliative Nursing practice required
•Minimum of one (1) year of experience with the initiation of IV therapy and central venous access devices required
•Knowledge/Skill/Judgement to access central venous access devices required, or willing to obtain within first 3 months of hire.
•Minimum of 1-3 years of experience as a primary nurse in an ambulatory clinic environment preferred
•Minimum of 1-3 years of experience with telephone triage nursing principles and practices preferred
•Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines and budget in accordance to Southlake Regional Health Centre standards.
•Excellent physical assessment skills

Qualifications
•Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse
•BScN preferred
•Certification in chemotherapy administration from a recognized institution (de Souza Institute/ Oncology Nurses Society [ONS]) within the first 6 months of hire, demonstration of annual recertification.
•Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative Care (LEAP) certification preferred
•CON (C) in oncology preferred
•Active member of Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology(CANO) preferred
