Position Information Position Number P01422 Position Title Culinary Porter (On-Call) Division/Portfolio Trades and Apprenticeship Department/Program Culinary Arts Location Kelowna Other Flexible Work Options Your Opportunity Reporting to the Manager, Culinary and Pastry Arts, and receiving direction from the department Chairperson and Chef Instructors, the Culinary Porter provides support and assistance to the Culinary and Pastry Arts programs. The Culinary Porter is responsible for: ensuring meal preparation areas are orderly and sanitized; conducting routine maintenance checks to ensure all kitchen equipment is in good working order; assisting Chefs with basic food preparation and ensuring work stations are complete; organizing, maintaining and taking inventory of all refrigerator, freezer and storage areas; receiving orders and unpacking deliveries, administering first aid as required. Functions and Duties 1. Maintains inventories and completes request to purchase forms for the ordering of the food and operational supplies required for the training programs2. Ensures the refrigerators, freezers, and dry storage areas are fully stocked, well-organized and clean
3. Cleans and organizes all meal preparation areas, ensuring the stations are equipped with all required utensils and cooking equipment required for instruction and/or demonstration
4. Conducts routine checks to ensures that all refrigerators, ovens, stoves, mixers, and other cooking equipment are in good working order and meet required food health and safety regulations
5. Receiving, unpacking and storing all deliveries, reconciling packing slips and invoices to purchase orders
6. Assists the Chef instructors with basic food preparation ahead of class instruction, including washing, peeling and cutting meal ingredients as per the Chef’s instructions
7. Assists with the washing of dirty dishes, cutting boards, utensils, and cooking equipment as required
8. Maintains and updates supplier catalogues for purchase orders
9. Advises Department Chairperson and/or Manager on status of kitchen equipment tools and supply inventory and future requirements
10. Maintains and updates the WHMIS system (MSDS records)
11. Opens and closes the kitchen, including starting up and shutting down equipment, such as ovens and fryers
12. Attends to daily requirements of Culinary staff and students in an efficient and courteous manner
13. Provides first aid to staff and students; maintains first aid supplies
14. Performs other related duties as required Education and Experience Completion of Grade 12. Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience.
Completion of the Occupational First Aid – Level 2 certificate and Food Safety Certificate will be required upon hiring. Skills and Abilities - Excellent communication skills and ability to follow instructions
- Adhere to food health and safety regulations while carrying out kitchen duties
- Skilled in maintaining inventories and ordering supplies
- Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds at a time
- Ability to prioritize, be flexible and able to manage a high work volume and competing priorities to meet deadlines
- Must be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team Preferred Qualifications Desired Start Date 08/06/2024 Position End Date (if temporary) 01/03/2025 Schedule Given on-call nature of position, schedule would be determined based on coverage required but would not exceed 35 hours/week.
