Summary

Captain Dan’s Inc. is happy to offer students gainful employment and valuable experience in an industrial science setting as a Microbiology Laboratory Technician. This summer position will be based on 37.5 hours per week beginning in May / June until August 30, , and will involve testing seafood products at our facility in Bouctouche to ensure they meet industry standards and to identify and correct any health or quality control issues that may arise.

Job Duties
• Generally assisting the Lab Manager in daily duties
• Receiving and preparing samples for analysis.
• Preparation of culture media for microbiological analysis.
• Assist with the maintenance and calibration of lab equipment.
• Microbiological and chemical analysis of food and water samples.
• Ensure compliance with industry policies and procedures to maintain product integrity and quality control.
• Analyze data and prepare reports for clients.
• Recognize and report food safety issues.
• General lab maintenance (cleanliness, organization, materials disposal, cleaning glassware, etc.).

Exigences Requirements
• Biology, chemistry, or biochemistry student in their second year of university or higher.
• Understanding of good laboratory practices and sanitation.
• Demonstrate good judgment and a sense of organization.
• Ability to work and communicate in a team and independently.
• Good record of previous work (performance and attendance).
• Respect for the rules of confidentiality.
• Applicants must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
• Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Additional Information
• Must be returning to school (college or university) in the fall
• Students will need to hold or be ready to receive training in the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
• Candidates will also be trained in accordance with the on-site laboratory’s safety standards and expectations by the Microbiology Laboratory Manager. Additional training and demos may be offered by our suppliers.
• Working with and analyzing microbiological cultures may be time demanding. Students may expect long hours and daily maintenance depending on the samples received. More details are available on request.
