Your Opportunity:

Help ensure Alberta Health Services’ (AHS) Emergency Medical Service (EMS) personnel have the supports and mental health services they need to cope with the stresses encountered in their daily work and continue to provide safe, high-quality, patient care. AHS is currently looking for an experienced and compassionate psychologist who has a deep understanding of the mental health challenges facing public safety personnel for the key role of EMS Psychologist. AHS is organized into five geographic Zones. As this is a provincial position, the physical work location is negotiable within the five Zones.As a member of the EMS Employee Wellness team, the EMS Psychologist provides subject matter expertise, clinical guidance, and consultation on proactive and reactive EMS Employee Wellness initiatives supporting the safety, health, and resilience of our EMS workforce. This role reports directly to the Program Manager, EMS Employee Wellness and collaborates closely with the Supervisor, EMS Reintegration to provide clinical oversight and guidance to our EMS Reintegration Program. Key responsibilities will include providing clinical guidance, and consultation on evidence-based and best practice-informed program planning, documentation, and evaluation for the current EMS Reintegration Program; clinical guidance/mentoring to the EMS Reintegration Team supporting our EMS members; and training and education development for the Reintegration Program. The EMS Psychologist also directly oversees the screening and intake process for employees accessing the Reintegration Program, including consultation with external mental health professionals recommending EMS staff for Reintegration Program support when needed. The EMS Psychologist will not be performing direct independent assessments on EMS staff.

Description:

As a Psychologist I, you will work with or within teams to provide a range of standard level psychology services to patients and their families within the established standards, directives, and policies for the work environment. Your services may include psychological screening and/or assessment, diagnosis, interventions, rehabilitation, prevention and promotion, as well as educational activities. You will collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals in planning and implementing services that align with best practices and ethical and professional standards. You will provide input to the interprofessional team related to psychological factors, barriers and dynamics that influence client treatment planning, participation, outcomes and team functioning, and consult and collaborate with teams and community services. Your duties may also include providing supervision to psychometrists, provisional psychologists and/or masters level psychology students, and providing input into program, policy and/or procedure development in addition to participating in formal research initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in Psychology in an applied area relevant to the practice setting from an accredited university program. Active or eligible for registration with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Relevant experience in areas such as mental health/wellness, suicide awareness/prevention, substance use, occupational stress injury, trauma-informed practices and treatment protocols, and moral injury.Experience working with or knowledge of public safety personnel/first responders and the associated mental health challenges.Experience in the development of evidence-based and best-practice informed programs.Experience in formal workplace peer support and reintegration programs.Experience or knowledge in psychodiagnostic assessment and/or clinical interventions used in reintegration.Experience or knowledge in proactive and reactive mental health/wellness strategies and support, suicide awareness/prevention, substance use, occupational stress injury, moral injury/distress, and trauma-informed practices.Experience creating and delivering evidence-based and best-practice informed education, presentations, and webinars.Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of exposure principles in treating anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and occupational stress injury (OSI).Training and experience in delivering evidence-based post-trauma treatments based on exposure principles (, Prolonged Exposure, Cognitive Processing Therapy, trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy).

Preferred Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in Psychology in an applied area relevant to the practice setting (clinical, counselling, or educational) or in the process of obtaining a doctoral degree in Psychology from a Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) or American Psychological Association (APA) accredited program. Internship from a CPA or APA accredited internship program preferred. Relevant experience in organizational wellbeing.Experience in formative evaluation.Knowledge of WCB protocols and processes.
