Literacy Instructor

Term of Employment: As Soon As Possible to June 30, 2025

Rate of Pay: $23.92 to 32.35 per hour

Location: Portage Learning and Literacy Centre (Portage la Prairie)

(35 hours per week) 

The Literacy Instructor is responsible for assisting with the development and delivery of the Literacy program, assisting students in both the Literacy and Mature high school diploma program learners with Literacy and Numeracy skills. This role will lead a classroom of learners on the Manitoba Stages Framework for Literacy, and support learner transitions in the program.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Deliver and adapt instructional materials to meet learners’ varying needs for Literacy and Numeracy classes.Employ instructional techniques that are appropriate and effective. Help create a stimulating, non-threatening environment that encourages learners to develop feelings of self-worth, dignity, and respect.Monitor and document learner progress, including attendance. Maintain confidentiality including a secure filing system.Collaborate with Literacy colleagues to holistically support learners in their Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital Skills progression.Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

A combination of related education and experience may be considered.

Level 1 Literacy or Education Assistant Diploma or related experience.Excellent understanding of Math and Numeracy concepts.Excellent understanding of communication skills and Literacy (Reading, Writing) concepts.Good working knowledge of computers with Windows-based operating system and experience with Microsoft Office.Familiarity with the needs of adult learners and adult learning principles.Capacity to work in a self-directed manner and collaborate with others in a team setting.Excellent organizational and time management skills, attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

 Experience in an educational setting or community-based program facilitation 

Conditions of Employment:

Legally entitled to work in Canada.Successful completion of a Criminal Record check including vulnerable sector and Child Abuse Registry Check.
