At NAIT, we employ a LearningOutcomes approach to our advising, information, and apprenticeship coordinationservices, to engage and empower students/apprentices as they progress throughtheir learning lifecycle. Academic Liaisons are dedicated professionals focusingon student/apprentice support, and progression.

Reporting to the Director ofAcademic Operations, the ‘Academic Liaison, with Apprenticeship Focus’, is a senior-levelposition combining Apprenticeship Coordination (e.g., apprentice sponsorship),academic and apprenticeship administration, project management, andteam-lead/mentor; the position requires considerable contact with students/apprenticesthrough one-on-one sessions, group settings, and/or workshops. AcademicLiaisons are expected to possess or be willing to develop robust, comprehensiveknowledge about their assigned portfolio (i.e., Apprenticeship), includingacademic programs and pathways, internal and external agencies andassociations, policies, procedures, student supports, and financial serviceswithin the scope of their responsibilities. Academic Liaisons must be able tointerpret student needs and provide individualized student/apprentice-centeredservice independently and thoroughly. The scope of this role will requireextensive relationship building to work collaboratively and collegially withprogram and service area colleagues across NAIT. 

NAIT is actively strengthening our apprenticeship-focusedsupport functions; as such, the Academic Liaison must be comfortable with leadingchange and within the scope of their role, not just bringing forwardsuggestions for improvements to advising practices and business processes butleading the creation and integration of them. An Academic Liaison must demonstrate a desire to help others, displayconfidence and composure, and be competent problem-solvers who will use theirextensive knowledge to advise students effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

Act as a subject matter expert (SME) in Alberta’sapprenticeship system, and apprentice sponsorship, coordinating with externalstakeholders, such as Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT), internalNAIT stakeholders, such as the Registrar's Office, School Leadership, ProgramLeadership, and other NAIT services, to support the life cycle of apprenticesponsorship. Lead the creation and/or continuous improvement of NAIT’soverall apprenticeship sponsorship coordination processes. Create and maintain relationships with internal andexternal stakeholders, such as prospective employers, to help connect students/apprenticesto employment opportunities. Monitor NAIT-sponsored-apprentice demand andemployment prospects to foster placement opportunities for NAIT-sponsoredapprenticeship students. Guide eligible participants on AIT and NAIT enrolmentpractices to support the participant’s enrolment in their program of choice. Support resolvingcomplex student/apprentice concerns and/or conduct; coordinate and liaise with NAITLeadership, School Leadership, Program Leadership, Faculty, and StudentResolution Office.

Skills & Abilities:

To be successful in this role, you will require astrong understanding of Alberta’s apprenticeship system and theoreticalframework of student-centered developmental advising; the ability to handlestudent, public, external agency, and staff inquiries with respect, confidence,and tact; process creation and project management experience; significantknowledge of apprenticeship programming, academic programming, studentservices, academic administration policies, and processes; highly developedcommunication and interpersonal skills including effective listening andemotional intelligence; excellent problem-solving, conflict resolution,conflict management, and mediation skills; excellent time-management skills andability to prioritize and organize; ability to work as a team leader and buildcollaborative working relationships; ability to learn and use related software.

Qualifications:

Related post-secondary undergraduate degree 5+ years of related experience in post-secondaryeducation. Equivalencies (combination of education and experience) may beconsidered. Driver’s license.
