About the Role

We are seeking a credit contract instructor to teach in Speech. Working within the School of Communication Studies, and located in the Department of Broadcasting and Journalism, the Speech program requires candidates with teaching and practical experience to teach one or more of the following courses:

Spch 3011: Presenting Complex Ideas Through Narration and Visual Media

A well-told story is a means of discovery. While multiple disciplines focus on the translation of information using visual media, this course seeks to deepen speakers’ understanding of the unique tools necessary for effective and impactful oral communication of complex concepts. The oral modality creates unique demands for presenters with regard to structure, visual representation and delivery of ideas. Students will learn practical skills to create compelling visual narratives to communicate challenging content to lay audiences.

This course in Public Speaking will concentrate on the development of the student’s presentation style in the business arena. Emphasis is on the diversity of verbal and non-verbal delivery techniques in various situations including; interviews, business proposals, report reading, internet conferencing, impromptu speaking, training presentations and group forum.

This course provides an introduction to current theories of communication. An understanding of effective communication and its potential is promoted through participation in a variety of speaking situations. Opportunity is given for group discussion; audience analysis; development of good listening habits and how to research, organize and prepare various types of speeches.

Responsibilities


Course delivery, including preparation of course syllabi, course schedules, lesson preparation, active learning activities, assessments, and course management on D2L platform. Instructors should also be familiar with all policies and procedures associated with teaching and working at MRU. 

Qualifications

Undergraduate teaching experience in the field of oral communications  A minimum of a Master’s degree or equivalent in Speech Communications or related field We seek individuals who encourage the development of oral modalities to strengthen student confidence in sharing ideas publicly and effectively, regardless of discipline For SPCH 3011, candidates must have a technical background () with proven experience in translating technical knowledge for public consumption  Experience in industry-related coaching is an asset
