Overview

The Mechanic 1 (Plumber) is responsible for the installation, replacement and repair of complete hot and cold water systems, HVAC and other mechanical systems, kitchen and laboratory equipment and related service lines and controls, drainage, condensate return and sewer systems, fire hydrants, and all man-holes and tunnels, contributing towards providing a safe and accessible, invitingly clean and comfortable, functionally-enriched and well-maintained campus environment through service excellence.

Responsibilities

Strategic Planning Supports

Strategic planning efforts addressing stewardship responsibilities and long-term sustainability of the University’s campus, facilities and infrastructure and maximizing opportunities for efficient delivery of campus services and optimal investments in University-wide infrastructure.

Operations

Performs assigned work within assigned facilities, including but not limited to: Installs and repairs hot and cold water systems, steam systems, condensate systems and related equipment and controls. Installs, maintains or repairs hot water tanks, steam coils, chilled water coils and lines, valves, water temperature and pressure regulators, and back flow preventors. Maintains and repairs the entire drain and sewage systems and fire hydrants. Maintains and repairs bottle washers, incinerators, autoclaves, steam cookers, acid waste and dilution tanks, as well as other equipment.

Provides trade and job instruction as well as work direction to other classifications. May coordinate work among other classifications

In consideration of the University’s commitment to the safety and well-being of all faculty, support staff, students, and visitors, responsible for ensuring University facilities and departmental activities are compliant with all applicable legislation, regulations, codes and standards related to facilities operations as well as occupational health and environmental safety. Active in health and safety and incident prevention by adhering to departmental policy, procedures and safe work practices required by the University health, safety and environment management system (HSEMS), and in accordance with relevant health and safety legislation, developing and enhancing a safety culture among support staff.

Other

Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned and supports departmental activities, including performing work of other classifications within scope of trade practice, level of incumbent’s capability/ competency/ skills, and/ or regulatory requirements. May perform work of a lower classification/ pay band.

Qualifications

Minimum of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent Valid Provincial Trade Certification as a Plumber. Valid Cross Connection / Backflow Device testing license. Minimum five (5) years recent experience as a certified plumber. Experience testing backflow devices. Work experience within major institutional sector(s), such as education, post-secondary education, medical/ hospital or related construction industry, may be preferred.  Must be customer and team oriented, as well as self-motivated and able to work successfully with minimal supervision. Demonstrated and in-depth understanding of all related tools and shop equipment. Sound knowledge of the trade. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings, make accurate material takeoffs, and write summary reports of condition assessment surveys when necessary. Possesses a valid Ontario class 'G' driver's license or equivalent.
