Title Nursing Practice Consultant, Harm Reduction and Substance Use Contract Permanent Full-Time. Hours 37.5 hours. Location Metro Vancouver Offices (Remote working may be an option in line with FNHA’s flexible work policy - minimum 50% in the office). About the role
As the Nursing Practice Consultant (Harm Reduction and Substance Use) you will deliver professional nursing support and educational activities to community based First Nation Health Service Organizations and FNHA nursing programs in relation to mental health and substance use. 

You will provide direct support to improve nursing practice standards in communities with a focus on the activity of RN/RPN prescribing of opiate agonist treatment and addressing the toxic drug crisis. This role supports on-the-ground planning and implementation of harm reduction and substance use training and skill development activities for community nurses employed in the delivery of nursing care in First Nations communities. Travel to communities in the Vancouver Coastal Region will be a requirement of the position.

About you
To be successful in this role you will have/be:

Bachelor’s degree in registered nursing or bachelor’s degree in psychiatric nursing, from a recognized university or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Additional training and education related to substance use, harm reduction, mental health and trauma informed practice. Three (3) years of experience as a registered nurse (RN) or registered psychiatric nurse (RPN) providing clinical practice support in primary care, community and/or public health nursing or acute care, ambulatory care and/or outpatient centres, including two (2) years of experience caring for clients with harm reduction and substance use concerns.  Completion of BCCSU RN/RPN Prescribing Education Program is an asset. Current practicing registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Knowledge of, and ability to apply, an understanding of First Nations cultural principles and protocols in work situations. Knowledge of traditional and other recognized healing practices. Knowledge of concepts, principles and theories of trans-cultural nursing, including knowledge of traditional, and other healing practices used in the community. Knowledge of health status of populations, inequities in health, the determinants of health and illness, principals of primary care, strategies for health promotion, disease and injury prevention, health protection, curative, urgent and emergent care, rehabilitation, harm reduction and supportive care. Knowledge of the nursing process, conceptual frameworks of nursing, and theories and principles of nursing practice.

You may have experience in:

Planning, organizing, and delivering a comprehensive range of professional nursing services in communities and in the office, including consultation, assessment, facilitation, teaching, and evaluation to further the development of knowledge and skills for nurses working in community with clients who experience mental health and substance use issues. Provides clinical expertise to nurses to assist them in providing safe and competent nursing care, in the areas of substance use, harm reduction, trauma informed practice and safe prescribing practices.
