Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) serves this community as one of two tertiary hospitals in Interior Health, providing 400 beds and a full array of specialty services. Job Overview The Cardiac Anesthesia Division at KGH is recruiting a locum physician focused on the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CSICU), a 6‑bed unit with the capacity to expand to 8 beds. The unit manages all adult post‑cardiac‑surgery patients, including those requiring V‑A or V‑V ECMO, VAD, or short‑term mechanical support. This position complements an eight‑member Cardiac Anesthesia Division that provides perioperative anesthesia, TAVI support (≈150 cases annually), and complex non‑cardiac consultation. The ideal candidate will be an intensivist or cardiac anesthesiologist with a strong interest in cardiac critical care. Responsibilities Provide dedicated coverage and expertise in the CSICU, attending to surgical patients and managing their critical‑care needs. Collaborate closely with the Cardiac Anesthesia Division to enhance patient safety and outcomes. Perform and supervise pain‑management, sedation, anesthetic, and procedural support across a wide range of surgical specialties, including thoracic, vascular, plastic, ENT, and general surgery. Participate in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, contributing to academic activities linked to the University of British Columbia Southern Medical Program. Contribute to quality improvement, research initiatives, and educational outreach within the community. Qualifications Fellowship in Anesthesiology (Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada). 12‑month cardiac anesthesia fellowship with TEE certification from the National Board of Echocardiography. Strong clinical judgment, communication, and leadership in a high‑acuity environment. Commitment to continual learning and engagement in academic and research endeavors. Eligibility and Credentials Eligibility for privileging at KGH and Interior Health, including acute pain service management, out‑of‑OR sedation, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, trauma, urology, orthopedic, thoracic, vascular, plastic, ENT, and general surgery. Ability to meet call requirements and support multiple specialties across day‑time and on‑call shifts. Compensation and Benefits Compensation Type: Fee‑for‑Service – competitive remuneration supplemented with MOCAP. Relocation Funding: $9,000 – $15,000 (based on move location with eligible receipts). Travel and accommodation expenses reimbursed. Other benefits and incentives are subject to change; current rates are confirmed at the time of offer. About Kelowna General Hospital Kelowna General Hospital hosts the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre, BC’s only cardiac critical care centre outside of the Lower Mainland. The 360,000‑square‑foot Centennial Building houses emergency, inpatient, neonatal, pediatric, psychiatric, and laboratory services, along with 12 specialized operating rooms, of which two are dedicated to cardiac surgery.
