St. George's School is seeking an experienced and energized Grade 6/7 Resource Teacher. This role requires an innovative teaching professional to support a collaborative learning environment using engaging and meaningful pedagogy focused on student learning and growth. The Resource Teacher works collaboratively with teachers, parents, administration, and private practitioners to meet the specific needs of students in a number of ways. This includes diagnostic and academic assessment for the purpose of remedial intervention and the differentiation of instruction in the classroom; interpretation of assessment results and the development of IEP's (Individual Educational Plans) and Support Plans; screening measures and referrals to outside professionals (e.g. vision/hearing, speech/language, occupational therapy, psychologists, etc.); individual, small group or in-class support; parent education and resources for classroom teachers (e.g. whole class lessons to demonstrate learning strategies that best meet the requirements of the students).

Faculty are required to support the school co-curricular program for two of the three terms. The co-curricular program includes, Athletic, Academic, Artistic, or Community commitments and is offered a minimum once a week, per term.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Serves as a Resource Teacher for Grades 6/7 students; working in unison with the Grade 6/7 faculty providing support.
  • Supports and delivers the Resource curriculum through the classroom setting.
  • Works with classroom teachers to help differentiate lessons that better meet the needs of IEP/SSP students.
  • Develops Individual Education Plans (IEPs)/SSP's and facilitates meetings with staff, parents, and psychologists throughout the year.
  • Promotes the use and development of assistive technology for students with physical/learning disabilities.
  • Completes ministry documents for funding and communicates with ministry officials to ensure that proper funding protocol is followed.
  • Communicates the objectives of the Resource Program to education stakeholders (administrators, teachers, students, parents, and other community interests).
  • Supports, encourages and promotes overall involvement in school's extra-curricular programs (games, clubs, performing arts and service).

Qualifications will include:

  • Post-secondary degree in the areas relevant for Special Education. Master's Degree in Educational Psychology/Special Education preferred.
  • Valid BC Teaching Certificate, or maintains the ability to obtain one.
  • Ability to administer diagnostic and achievement tests considered an asset.
  • Superior ability to build rapport, trust and relationships with students.
  • Superior ability to garner confidence from a network of key stakeholders (i.e. parents, students, faculty members, external support services).
  • Ability to employ an eclectic and balanced approach to assisting students and their parents.
  • Thorough knowledge of modern practices in learning disability interventions.
  • Commitment to professional growth.
  • Experience in presenting cases to the School Based Team (SBT).
  • Experience working in an environment of excellence where a broad spectrum of programs operate simultaneously, demanding a great deal of forward planning and creativity.
  • Understanding of pedagogical trends through relevant, recent professional development.
  • Strongly committed to student learning and success; being able to understand the needs of students while engaging them as active learners.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
