THE OPPORTUNITY

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Electrical Engineer – Embedded Circuit Design (Fire & Security Systems) to join Harding Technologies based in Edmonton, Alberta. Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer and President, the Senior Electrical Engineer will be the technical lead for New Product Development (NPD) projects, driving the design and integration of Fire Alarm Control Panels and peripheral devices. The Senior Electrical Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including remote engineers, to define product architecture, ensure seamless hardware/firmware/software integration, and deliver market-ready solutions. This role requires a strong focus on reliability, safety, and compliance with industry standards (e.g., UL, NFPA, ULC, CE). This position is also pivotal in translating concepts into compliant, high-quality products that align with Harding's vision for safety and innovation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and develop embedded circuit solutions for fire and security systems.
  • Create detailed circuit schematics and PCB layouts compliant with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to integrate hardware and firmware for embedded systems.
  • Prototype, test, and debug embedded circuits, ensuring reliability and fault tolerance.
  • Conduct performance and environmental testing to validate system integrity.
  • Document design processes, test results, and circuit specifications.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Stay updated on advancements in embedded systems, fire/security technologies, and industry regulations.
  • Ensure designs meet functional, safety (UL/ULC/FM), cost, and reliability standards.
  • Develop documentation (e.g., DFMEAs, functional block diagrams) and lead root cause analysis using tools like fault-tree analysis.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Controls or a related field
  • Master's degree (preferred).
  • 5+ years in embedded circuit design, particularly for safety-critical systems (fire detection, security, or emergency response).
  • Must apply and be able to get an APEGA membership.

KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Proficiency in PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, Eagle, OrCAD).
  • Experience with embedded microcontrollers (e.g., ARM, PIC) and communication protocols (e.g., RS-485, I2C, SPI, CAN).
  • Knowledge of low-power embedded designs and real-time systems.
  • Familiarity with wireless communication technologies (e.g., Wi-Fi, Zigbee, cellular).
  • In-depth understanding of safety standards (UL, NFPA, ULC, CE).
  • Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
