Temporary Acting Head Caretaker

Location: Assumption College School, Brantford

Afternoon Shift (3:30pm - 11:30pm)

Full Time - 40 Hours per Week - 1.0 FTE- 12 Months per year

PREREQUISITES FOR POSITION

1. Successful completion of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

2. A minimum of three years job experience as a Caretaker or other related job experience.

3. Excellent written communication skills, including experience writing requisitions for supplies, and writing reports regarding occurrences at the job site; and the ability to read and understand plans including floor plans, sketches, manufacturer’s literature on the installation and maintenance scheduling of equipment, WHMIS information, Material Safety Data Sheets and safety training course materials; as well as possessing mathematical skills for ordering and maintaining Inventory and conducting measurements and various other calculations related to the position.

4. A working knowledge of basic electricity, basic plumbing, heating system operation, yard maintenance, cleaning procedures and techniques, fire extinguishers and alarms. The ability to operate security systems and programmable time controllers.

5. A working knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures such as WHMIS, use of personal protective equipment, lifting techniques, materials handling, and working from ladders and scaffolding. Able to understand all WHMIS and safety regulations and perform tasks in a safe manner.

6. Demonstrated ability to plan and co-ordinate work assignments of caretaking/cleaning staff and recognize departmental priorities with minimal supervision.

7. Knowledge and experience in the safe operation of all required equipment and machinery, such as power/hand tools. Floor machines and lawn maintenance equipment including working from ladders, scaffolding, scissor-lifts, and man-lifts.

8. Excellent working knowledge of a computerized environment, including data entry in various software programs, internet, and e-mail.

9. Strong interpersonal skills with ability to communicate and function effectively with both internal and external parties including supervisors, plant staff, teachers, students, and contractors.

10. Ability to work independently and demonstrated experience working in a team atmosphere. Strong communication skills to collaboratively work and consult with School and Board staff, as well as members of the Custodial team.

11. Subjects to the Board’s duty to accommodate, ability to perform required physical tasks, including climbing ladders and scaffolding, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying moderate and heavy loads, including janitorial equipment, furniture, materials/supplies, pails of water and bags of garbage.

KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS:

1. Under the direction of the Supervisor of Facility Operations and/or the Custodial Coordinator(s), the Head Caretaker will be responsible for the daily co-ordination and changes to work assignments.

2. The Head Caretaker will assist with the coordination of training for new and casual caretakers and cleaners assigned to the site, as directed by the Supervisor of Facility Operations and/or the Custodial Coordinator(s).

3. The Head Caretaker will facilitate, review, and organize community use requests and interface with the electronic Community Use module, School Administrators and Central Facility staff to ensure the programs are delivered, scheduled, and set up as required. The Head Caretaker may also be required to communicate with permit holders to coordinate needs.

4. Co-operate with the Principal or Designate to ensure a safe and clean work environment for staff and students and assist the Principal or Designate with site emergencies.

5. Service and maintain the computerized HVAC heating system, including turning the system on/off, changing filters, greasing parts, and monitoring the operation of the system. Attending the school to ensure the heating system is running on weekends and holidays, as requested.

6. Service equipment, machinery, or systems. This would include changing filters, fan belts, greasing shafts, or bearings, etc.

7. Co-operate with the Principal and/or designate to maintain, perform and/or organize a clean, healthy and safe environment within the school or assigned work area including but not limited to the following:

sweep/vacuum floors and clean entrances/doorways daily;

wash desktops and tables regularly

wet mop floors on a regular schedule and also as may be required due to wet and muddy weather, illness or spillage

post "wet floor" signs until floors/stairs are dry

spray buff floors using floor buffing equipment

strip, seal and wax floors

brush down walls and ceilings; wash walls and doorways; dust furniture, trim, chalk troughs, display cases, benches, fire extinguishers on a regular basis; and empty pencil sharpeners.

clean washrooms including toilets, sinks and fountains daily, maintain supplies in washrooms

clean and wash windows, light fixture components, garbage cans, chalkboards, Bradley basins, kick plates, partitions, lockers, furniture and remove graffiti

safely handle and use cleaning and disinfecting chemicals

change light bulbs and ballasts

set u furniture and equipment, provide assistance, and clean up after meetings and school functions.

set up tables for display of student projects and lost/found articles

empty waste baskets, garbage containers and deposit garbage in the dumpster

maintain recycling stations and the disposal of recycled material

8. Maintain the school grounds to ensure safety and the clean appearance of the school including:

sweep walkways, remove snow/ice and salt/sand entrances, walkways, and parking lots.

mow lawns, trim and prune shrubbery, maintain flower beds and rake leaves

monitor grounds for garbage, i.e. paper, glass, etc.

raise/lower flag

9. Ensure that legal requirements are met with respect to safety and the building code, fire code and other related laws and regulations. Follow safe work practices and procedures, including ensuring that proper protective equipment is worn and maintained. Report infractions by staff to the Supervisor of Facility Operations and/or the Custodial Coordinator(s).

10. Ensure compliance with WHIMS regulations and that chemicals are used, labelled, and stored safely in accordance with the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). This includes referencing MSDS’s using computer programs.

11. Operate the school security system, including checking and locking interior/exterior doors, checking, closing, and locking windows through the building, turning lights on/off and activating the security system at the end of the shift.

12. Protect the Board’s property from abuse and vandalism and report any potentially harmful items or occurrences on or around school property.

13. Assist external groups using the school facilities, including opening/locking doors, and reporting any concerns to the principal, i.e., damages, smoking, fire regulations.

14. Attend the school for fire, security, or other after-hours events.

15. Maintain inventory of materials related to cleaning, including ordering, receiving and storage of cleaning materials and products.

16. Prepare and maintain accurate records as required, including ministry regulated reports/records, occurrence reports, school logs and inspections, security system reports, fire alarm checks.

17. Assist the Principal to carry out fire drills, safety audits and workplace inspections.

18. Follow safe work practices and procedures, including ensuring that proper protective equipment is worn and maintained.

19. Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Facility Operations and/or Custodial Coordinator(s), Principal or Designate.
