Carleton University is seeking an innovative, inclusive, collaborative leader as its next Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Design (FED). Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) and a member of Carleton’s senior leadership, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design provides visionary strategic direction, academic planning and administrative oversight to further the Faculty’s teaching and research initiatives. Committed to the success and development of students, faculty and staff, the new Dean will successfully manage the Faculty’s human, physical, financial and administrative resources. Working collaboratively with academic, industry, alumni and public sector partners, the new Dean will raise the impact, resources and reputation of the Faculty. The new Dean will collaborate closely with the six Associate Deans (Research, Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs, Engineering Practice, Policy & Planning, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and Student Success), one Assistant Dean (Special Projects), and a talented professional staff. Four Department Chairs and three School Directors are also part of the Dean’s leadership team. As a key advocate and representative for Carleton and FED, the Dean seeks and develops links within the University and with industry and community partners, as well as FED’s alumni nationally and around the world. Across Carleton, the Dean is a visible, collaborative, and approachable leader, forging cohesion and alignment with the Carleton community and encouraging strong links with alumni, industry, and community partners for the benefit of a diverse student body. The University is seeking an accomplished scholar and administrator who has demonstrated success in undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate education, and leadership in research strategy, team development, and growing an institutional research culture. The ideal candidate for Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design will have a record of excellence as an academic with strong achievements in teaching, demonstrated success managing large grant awards, overseeing large financial portfolios, building sustainable academic and administrative systems and the ability to enhance the Faculty’s national and international standing among peer engineering institutions through strategic, collective efforts. With proven academic leadership experience and a record of building effective teams, the new Dean will possess an open and collegial style, a creative approach to problem solving, the ability to identify and generate new sources of funding, and outstanding management, communication and interpersonal skills. The new Dean will be deeply committed to advancing, equity, diversity and inclusion amongst all faculty, staff and students, while relating successfully to a range of internal and external partners. The Dean must be eligible for appointment as a Full Professor and must be a Professional Engineer in good standing, and eligible to practice in Canada.
