Most people at Director or Senior Manager level are not actively job hunting. They are just quietly keeping score. Score of how often their view is taken seriously. Score of how long Partnership has been talked about without getting any closer. Score of how much extra work arrives every year compared to how much control actually follows. This role exists because a small public accounting firm has decided to be honest about succession. Not “sometime in the future.” Not “let’s revisit next year.” But now. The firm is small enough that you are visible from day one. Your clients know who you are. The Partners know how you think. Decisions are made quickly because there are not ten people who need to sign them off. At the same time, you are not exposed or under resourced. The firm sits within a global network, which means when things get technical or unusual, you are backed properly. You get depth and credibility without inheriting big firm politics. The work is proper Private Enterprise. Owner managed businesses who stay for years. Clients who want someone who understands their numbers, their tax position, and the reality of running a business. Accounting, reviews, and tax are not separate conversations here. They are one relationship. And importantly, this is not a Director role designed to park someone. If you do the job well, the path to Partner is clear, transparent, and discussed early. The firm is actively investing in who will run it next. After your first year, this is what the role usually looks like in practice. You are the senior point of contact for a portfolio of Private Enterprise clients. You are not firefighting everything yourself, but you are deeply involved where it matters. You review financial statements and engagements, oversee tax across those relationships, and act as the person clients trust when decisions are not straightforward. Internally, you are coaching Managers and Seniors, not just reviewing their work but helping them think more commercially. Externally, you are visible. With clients, with the network, and within the firm’s longer term plans. This tends to suit someone who is already asking themselves slightly uncomfortable questions. If you are a Senior Manager who knows they are ready, but cannot quite see how that step actually happens where they are now. Or a Director who has the title but not the influence, and wants a clearer route to Partnership within a firm that is small enough to care and well supported enough to grow.
