Accessibility Specialist

Left Turn Right Turn (LTRT) is a rapidly growing consulting firm. We help our clients understand their current situation, develop a vision of a better future, and build a plan to get them there. Collectively, we're passionate about improving communities through the collaborative exploration of solutions in accessibility and transit. Our accessibility team works with organizations, including museums, couriers, parks, railways and other public and private organizations, to help them improve the accessibility of their services, locations, practices, and policies . We pride ourselves on offering: Pragmatic Solutions. Visionary Transformation. (Alright, so it's a bit cheesy… but we like to think it's true). The LTRT team is creative, collaborative, and balanced. These are our core values that embody our approach to everything.
More information about our culture, compensation and what it's REALLY like to work with us can be found on our website.
Responsibilities
As an Accessibility Specialist, you would tackle a wide variety of projects, applying your smarts, experience, and creativity with our fun and dynamic team. You would actively engage in business development and foster relationships with clients. You would help us to build our company into the future. Most importantly, you'd bring a passion for working closely with clients to improve accessibility across Canada.
Your responsibilities would include:
- Building long-term relationships of trust with clients and acting as their advisor, providing non-judgmental advice.
- Drafting proposals for new client projects. This includes developing consultation plans, work approaches, and budgets.
- Consulting people with disabilities about their needs and priorities. For example, developing and analyzing surveys or facilitating focus groups.
- Researching best practices relevant to each client.
- Assessing the accessibility of organizations' internal and external operations by reviewing policies, facilitating workshops with clients, user testing, or accessibility audits.
- Analyzing results of consultations, research, and assessments to infer trends, key themes, and root causes.
- Developing pragmatic and prioritized strategies for clients to improve accessibility and reduce barriers.
- Writing reports and creating presentations that summarize findings for non-expert audiences.
- Developing and delivering training, workshops and presentations on accessibility.
- Managing projects, including schedules, budgets, and ensuring deliverables are aligned with client expectations.
Occasional travel may be required as our clients are spread across the country. Disability-related exceptions to this requirement can be discussed.
This is primarily a work-from-home position as LTRT does not currently maintain permanent office space. There are occasional opportunities for in-person gathering (for work or socializing) in the Greater Toronto Area (however candidates can be located anywhere in Canada).
Here are some examples of how we are improving accessibility:
- We led public engagements for the Toronto Transit Commission to inform its next Multi-Year Accessibility Plan.
- We recruited and worked with people with disabilities to test proposed new signage at the National Gallery of Canada. We then made recommendations to improve its accessibility.
- We assessed the accessibility of the website and communications materials of the BC FireSmart program, made recommendations for improvements, and trained their staff on how to be more accessible.
- We audited the accessibility of a sample of offices and warehouses for various international couriers to inform their accessibility planning.
- We worked with three municipalities in the Saanich Peninsula to assess their current accessibility, engage with people with disabilities, and develop plans on how to make improvements in the next three years.
- We assessed the hiring, retention, and accommodation processes of a major manufacturer and recommended improvements.
- We delivered training on accessibility and disability (e.g. the Office of the Privacy Commissioner), accessible communications (e.g. Museum of History), accessible employment practices, and accessible transportation systems (e.g. City of Saskatoon).

Do you have some or all of the following?
- A degree in a relevant field or related experience.
- 3-10 years of relevant professional experience is desirable.
- Oral and written fluency in English (required).
- Oral and written French language fluency (very significant asset)
