Petroleum Inspector - Burnaby, BC Job for client facility inspections, sampling, lab analysis for petroleum and petrochemicals for quality control, process control, and product development. Work includes quantity surveys of barges, ships, shore tanks, railcars and tank trucks. Requires laboratory equipment operation and regulatory compliance. Qualification Requirements Education: High school diploma or GED. 1–3 years experience using GC, HPLC, or related lab techniques. Internship/research experience considered. Knowledge of HS&E procedures and relevant regulations. Language & Math Skills: Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to perform basic arithmetic and algebra with various units. Reasoning Ability: Solve practical problems, apply common sense, understand instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Certificates: Valid driver’s license required. Physical Demands & Work Environment Stand, walk, use hands, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl. Occasionally sit. Regularly lift or move up to 50 lb, occasionally up to 100 lb with assistance. Work near mechanical parts, flammable material, explosive material. Work exposed to wet/humid conditions, fumes, chemicals, extreme temperatures, electrical shock, and radiation. Noise level moderate to loud. Safety training provided. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Receive orders, obtain information, and gather paperwork from Operations Supervisors on movements. Obtain and label samples from shore tanks, vessels, barges, railcars, and tank trucks per job order. Promptly deliver samples to the Inspectorate laboratory for analysis or return for retention. Accurately calculate quantities and results, complete required paperwork, and distribute copies appropriately. Operate laboratory equipment (microscopes, centrifuge, viscosimeter, balance scales, spectrophotometer, gas chromatograph, colorimeter, etc.). Prepare or add chemicals to meet specifications. Record test results on standardized forms and describe procedures used. Prepare graphs and charts. Ensure equipment is clean, sterilized, and in good operating condition. Maintain safety and monitoring equipment. Report to job site punctually and observe all applicable federal, state, terminal, refinery, and vessel regulations and standards. Attend key meetings with external personnel ashore or abroad; represent Inspectorate professionally. Communicate problems or discrepancies to Operations Supervisor or Dispatcher promptly. Maintain a 24‑hour on‑call status, including weekends and holidays. Participate in the Inspectorate’s Business Management System and attend company meetings as required. Other duties as assigned.
