THE OPPORTUNITY

Depending on the candidate’s experience and strengths, we are looking for a patent agent to assume a role with some or all of the following responsibilities:

  • Assisting with and overseeing patent filings before CIPO, USPTO and WIPO.
  • Responding to both foreign and domestic Office Actions.
  • Maintaining and overseeing patent files via electronic docketing system.
  • Corresponding with clients, foreign associates and patent offices.
  • Performing patentability searches, landscape searches, freedom to operate searches.
  • Preparing patentability opinions.
  • Building and maintaining successful client relationships.
  • Attending client intake meetings and invention disclosure sessions.
  • Meeting with inventors to identify their invention’s points of novelty.
  • Drafting patent applications for foreign and domestic filings.
  • Visiting clients, incubators and other stakeholders in the GTA/Kitchener Waterloo corridor.
  • Attending conferences and participating in other business development initiatives.
  • Any other tasks that may be assigned.


THE SKILL SET

  • Class 1 or Class 2 CPATA license status preferred but will welcome applications of registered patent agents/attorneys from other jurisdictions with strong résumés and willingness to pursue CPATA Class 1 license.
  • Successful completion of a degree in engineering, computer science, science or a related field.
  • Minimum of two years’ relevant experience in patent drafting and prosecution for both Canadian and foreign jurisdictions in a law firm context or in a corporate (in-house) IP group.
  • Client-oriented and results-driven mindset, ability to work well in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to structure information clearly, concisely, and logically.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • High level of motivation and commitment.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team and foster positive client and colleague relationships.
