About the job assemble terms of reference for engineering consultant studies and prepare specifications of contracts plan, organize and manage the tendering process and recommend final acceptance review and analyze engineering designs and prepare documents, reports and data for sites design, conduct and/or coordinate surveys and engineering/technical investigations ensure compliance with environmental legislation and ministry standards and guidelines provide testimony in court proceedings provide professional technical advice and training to staff Note: This position requires travel to areas throughout the Province of Ontario not accessible by public transit. What you bring to the team Mandatory requirements You currently have accreditation as a Professional Engineer in a Canadian Province or Territory, and you will obtain a Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) license as a condition of accepting this position. Technical Knowledge and Expertise You know and have experience in applying the theories, principles and practices of engineering science with specialized knowledge in civil, chemical, or environmental engineering. You have knowledge and expertise in mine rehabilitation, contaminated site clean-up, waste management, acid rock drainage and metal leaching, hydrology, and tailings management, with the ability to identify sources of pollutants and develop plans for mine rehabilitation and closure projects and programs. You have knowledge of relevant provincial and federal environmental legislation (e.g., Mining Act, Environmental Protection Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, Environmental Assessment Act, Environmental Bill of Rights, Occupational Health and Safety Act) to ensure compliance and provide policy recommendations. You are familiar with environmental management trends and emerging technologies to apply best practices in mine rehabilitation. Project, Risk, and Contract Management Skills You have experience in project management and change management methodologies to plan, monitor, and deliver complex projects on time. You have the ability to assess risks and provide recommendations, options, and technical expertise to senior management. You have knowledge and experience in procurement and contract management to plan, organize, and manage the tendering process, and recommend final acceptance for engineering projects. Communication and Interpersonal Skills You are skilled in consulting and advising stakeholders, including Indigenous communities, industry representatives, and government officials to effectively manage assigned projects/issues. You have the ability to negotiate scope changes and resolve performance issues with contractors and consultants to reach agreements. You possess a strong political acuity to manage sensitive issues and negotiate/build consensus among a multitude of diverse opinions, special interests, contentious and politically sensitive matters. You have an excellent ability to translate technical information into clear, plain language for non-technical audiences. Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills You have the ability to identify sources of pollutants and conduct investigations by reviewing engineering specifications and designs, analyzing technical aspects of mine closure processes and recommending effective rehabilitation programs. You have expertise in resolving physical and chemical stability issues at mining facilities undergoing closure. Ability to lead evaluations of remediation options for long-term care and maintenance, including engineered covers, water treatment, flooding, and underground relocation. Ability to assess and evaluate engineering reports, proposals, and third-party work for compliance with legislation, ministry standards, and guidelines. Computer Skills You are proficient in computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, and database packages to assess data, conduct analysis and prepare reports and presentations.
